Avengers: Doomsday is reportedly teeing up Marvel’s next hero‑on‑hero showdown, centering on a major character clash that could revive Civil War‑level stakes across the MCU sooner than expected.

Marvel may be setting up another superhero showdown that feels very familiar. The latest rumor dump around Avengers: Doomsday points to a central clash that echoes one of the MCU's biggest rivalries, only with a twist. If this all pans out, brace for the internet to start picking sides again.

The rumor everyone is spiraling over: Doom vs Steve

According to scooper chatter, the movie hangs on Victor von Doom going after Steve Rogers. The rough sketch: Doom loses his wife and son in an accident, he gets badly injured himself, and he tracks the root cause back to Steve hopping around in time. The motive is nothing if not personal.

If I understand it correctly, Victor von Doom's wife and son were killed in an accident, and Victor himself was injured and his body damaged. He traced the cause of the accident to Steve going back in time, and now he's after him to avenge his family.

That claim comes from @MyTimeToShineHello, who also framed it as a choose-your-fighter situation: Team Steve or Team Doom. Subtle, it is not.

So... 'Civil War 2'?

The same scooper also called the whole thing 'Civil War 2' and complained that it's basically RDJ vs Chris Evans all over again. Another rumor backs that up, saying Chris Evans would be playing a Nomad-era Steve while Robert Downey Jr. would be on the other side as Victor von Doom. Yes, that implies Downey isn't back as Tony Stark here, but as Doom. File that under bold if true.

Over on the deep-cut side, @JoshDenofNerds says he heard RDJ is 'absolutely COOKING' as Victor and 'has something to prove.' Again: rumors, not confirmations.

Where Kang fits into this mess

Alex Perez at Cosmic Circus added some connective tissue in a Q&A: Kang's motivations from Quantumania supposedly won't be tossed out. Instead, they would 'live on through Doctor Doom.' The way Perez describes it, Doom is furious about timeline tampering and the incursions that come with it, which lines up with the revenge angle above. Perez also said characters from Wonder Man and VisionQuest are expected to pop up in either Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars.

Casting ripples and other tea leaves

Perez played coy when someone brought up a Travis Fimmel GIF, saying he wasn't allowed to explain what that meant yet. That's the kind of answer that launches three new rumor threads before lunch.

  • Matchup talk: Evans as Nomad vs Downey as Doom; scoopers dubbing it 'Civil War 2'
  • Kang throughline: Quantumania motivations carry forward into Doom's agenda (via Alex Perez/Cosmic Circus)

  • Performance buzz: RDJ 'cooking' as Victor von Doom (via @JoshDenofNerds)
  • Tease check: Travis Fimmel chatter acknowledged but not explained (Perez)

What is actually official right now

Disney has pushed both big ensemble movies. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027. The delays are locked; everything else above is still in the rumor lane until Marvel says otherwise.

Originally reported by Vritti Johar at SuperHeroHype, with additional chatter from scoopers and Cosmic Circus. If this really is Evans vs Downey again, just inverted, the marketing writes itself.
