Superhero fatigue meets a comeback bid: Iron Man 3 director Shane Black says Robert Downey Jr. can resuscitate the genre — and shares his take on Avengers: Doomsday in a new ComicBook.com interview.

The superhero box office has been wobbling for a while. If there is one person who could jolt it back to life, Shane Black thinks it is Robert Downey Jr. Yep, Iron Man himself — but playing a very different icon this time.

Shane Black thinks RDJ as Doctor Doom could be the reset button

While promoting his new movie 'Play Dirty,' 'Iron Man 3' director Shane Black told ComicBook.com he was initially just as skeptical as the rest of us when Marvel announced Downey would suit up as Doctor Doom in 'Avengers: Doomsday.' Then he came around — hard.

'I think he's going to singlehandedly reinvigorate the entire comic book movie industry with that.'

Black admitted the whole idea sounded cynical at first — like Marvel going back to the one guy who always bails them out — but he now believes it is absolutely going to work. He also said he is not at liberty to reveal anything else (and joked he does not even know), but he will be first in line to see it. For a guy who admits he has not kept up with every Marvel release, that is saying something.

The wrinkle: Downey is back, but not as Tony Stark

Downey was the face of the MCU for its first decade as Tony Stark/Iron Man, so Marvel clearly knows what his return means. Even though he is stepping into a brand-new role as Doom, you can feel the strategy here: bring back lapsed fans who drifted after his exit, and maybe reset the temperature on the whole genre. Inside baseball? Sure. Also smart.

'Avengers: Doomsday' status check

Production wrapped principal photography earlier this month, with additional filming expected before release. The movie is dated for December 18, 2026, and it is designed as a big Multiverse Saga crossover — the kind that crams the theater with familiar faces and new toys.

  • Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom
  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor
  • Simu Liu as Shang-Chi
  • Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
  • The Fantastic Four in the mix
  • The X-Men also factoring in
  • Release date: December 18, 2026 (after more filming beyond the initial shoot)

It is a wild swing to bring Downey back as Marvel's ultimate villain, but if there is anyone who can thread that needle and get people excited again, it is probably him. If Shane Black is right, 'Doomsday' might end up being a turning point — not just for the MCU, but for superhero movies in general.
