As producer, Martin Scorsese taps Jennifer Lawrence to play Grace in Die My Love, crediting her powerhouse Mother! performance in a post on X.

Martin Scorsese didn’t just sign on to produce Die My Love — he pushed for Jennifer Lawrence to star. And the reason he gave is very him: her polarizing, go-for-broke turn in 2017’s Mother! convinced him she should take this one on. Honestly, that tracks.

What Scorsese saw in Lawrence

In a post making the rounds on X on October 29, 2025, Scorsese explains that Lawrence’s Mother! performance knocked him out and that he urged her to chase something equally risky here.

"I said, 'You know what? This is a challenge. This is the kind of thing you should be doing. Go take a chance. Knock any sense of a comfortable character off the board and just go for it.'"

He’s a producer on Die My Love, and apparently handpicked Lawrence to play Grace because he felt this was exactly the kind of swing she should take next.

The Mother! connection (and Lawrence’s very on-brand joke)

Lawrence has been refreshingly blunt about Mother! over the years. On Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she joked that even being in it didn’t mean she fully understood it — then deadpanned that dating the director at the time gave her "CliffsNotes." For clarity on timeline: she and Darren Aronofsky were together for roughly a year and split in November 2017, about a month after the film’s release.

So what is Die My Love, exactly?

It’s a black comedy-drama centered on Grace, a writer and new mom spiraling with postpartum depression in a secluded house in Montana. Her behavior turns erratic and increasingly dangerous, leaving her partner, Jackson, scared and out of his depth. It’s the kind of intimate pressure-cooker role where the lead has nowhere to hide — which is probably why Scorsese connected it to Lawrence’s work in Mother!, where she played a new mother facing a nightmare parade of uninvited guests, a house that turns into chaos, and a finale that, well, goes full cult-adjacent fever dream. Different movies, similar emotional free fall.

Quick facts

  • Die My Love: Produced by Martin Scorsese; directed by Lynne Ramsay; stars Jennifer Lawrence (as Grace), Robert Pattinson, and Sissy Spacek; genre: black comedy-drama; U.S. theatrical release set for November 7, 2025; production: Black Label Media; currently listed at 6.6/10 on IMDb and 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Mother!: Directed by Darren Aronofsky; stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, and Ed Harris; released in 2017; produced by Protozoa Pictures; currently streaming on Paramount+; ratings at 6.6/10 on IMDb and 68% on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • The Scorsese-Lawrence link: He says her Mother! performance is what made him push for her to lead Die My Love, telling her to ditch any "comfortable" choices and go all-in.
  • That WWHL aside: Lawrence joked she had "CliffsNotes" on Mother! because she was dating the director; for the record, she and Aronofsky were together for about a year and split in November 2017.
  • Vibe check: If Mother! proved Lawrence can hold the center of a volatile, divisive story, Ramsay’s Die My Love looks like the next logical escalation.

Bottom line: Scorsese nudging Lawrence toward another big, unnerving swing — with Ramsay behind the camera — is a great sign. If you like watching a fearless actor ride the edge, this one’s circled on the calendar.
