Mark Your Calendars: The Summer I Turned Pretty Movie Sets New Release Date

If you were hoping to spend Christmas 2025 with the The Summer I Turned Pretty finale movie, go ahead and cross that off your calendar. Jenny Han just put a pin in the hype and explained why the movie that caps the Prime Video series is nowhere near ready.

Where things actually stand

• Han says the script is newly finished.
• No footage has been shot yet. As in, zero.
• Despite chatter, a Christmas 2025 release is not happening.
• Season 3 ate up the schedule: post-production ran so late that there was no chance to also film a movie.
• Given the timeline, a realistic window is well past 2025; 2027 is looking more likely than not.

Han, who created the show and wrote the TSITP novels (and also penned the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before books), gave the update during The Wrap’s 2025 Power Women Summit. She kept it simple:

"I just wrote it. We have not filmed anything yet."

"I know that everyone was hoping that it was coming out this Christmas, but unfortunately, not happening, not possible."

She also pointed to how tight the Season 3 turnaround was. The season dropped in July, and post wrapped about a month before that. In other words, there wasn’t a spare minute to mount a feature that’s supposed to close the book on the series.

None of this should be a shock if you caught her earlier comments. Han already warned that calling it a 2025 release was unsafe since filming hasn’t begun: "I don’t know when it will be out, but I don’t think it’s safe to say next year because we haven’t filmed it yet." Connecting the dots: even if cameras roll in 2025 or early 2026, you’re still looking at a long road through production and post. So, yeah — 2027 feels like the realistic target.

Bottom line: the TSITP movie is happening and it will wrap up the Prime Video series, but it’s in the very early stages. Once they start shooting, the timeline will make a lot more sense. Until then, patience.
