Made in the 2000s: 5 of the Finest Rom Coms Available on Max
Don't be intimidated by their low scores!
The 2000s saw the premiere of many prominent films, but the decade was especially full of rom coms. While some, like The Proposal, have become classics, others have been largely forgotten.
These five romantic comedies are barely remembered today, but they are still some of the best in the genre.
Meet the Browns (2008, 4.5 on IMDb)
Tyler Perry's romantic comedy-drama follows Angela Bassett's character, Brenda Brown-Davis, a single mother of three from Chicago struggling to make ends meet. One day, she is invited to Georgia for the funeral of her father, whom she hasn't met once in her lifetime. There, Angela meets the many relatives she didn't think she had, and her life changes forever – especially, when romance appears on the horizon.
My Boss's Daughter (2003, 4.7 on IMDb)
Starring Ashton Kutcher, Tara Reid and Terence Stamp, this underrated rom com follows Kutcher's Tom Stansfield as he tries to impress his strict boss' daughter whom he has a crush on. One night, she asks Tom to watch the house for her so she can attend a party. At his peril, Tom agrees, and a series of hilarious events ensue, including the escape of Tom's boss' pet owl and a raid by drug dealers that leaves the house in chaos.
Over Her Dead Body (2008, 5.3 on IMDb)
Jeff Lowell's romantic comedy stars Eva Longoria, Paul Rudd and Lake Bell as Kate, Henry and Ashley, who are caught in a paranormal love triangle. On the day of her and Henry's wedding, Kate is killed by an ice sculpture they ordered, but her soul remains on Earth because she argues with the angel who is supposed to take her to the afterlife. A year later, at his sister's request, Henry visits a psychic, Ashley, in hopes of finding closure, and falls in love with her. Kate is none too happy about this and begins to haunt Ashley to get her to leave Henry alone.
Kate & Leopold (2001, 6.4 on IMDb)
This fantasy rom com explores the familiar trope of the butterfly effect of time travel as it centers on Leopold, a 19th century duke and engineer who accidentally travels to 21st century New York by following his great-great-great-grandson, physicist and explorer Stuart, through a portal. While waiting for the next portal to open, Leopold experiences modern life and falls in love with Stuart's ex-girlfriend Kate. The movie stars Meg Ryan, Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber.
The Upside of Anger (2005, 6.8 on IMDb)
Mike Binder's romantic comedy-drama follows Joan Allen's Terry Wolfmeyer, a mother of four daughters whose husband has left her for a young secretary. Losing interest in life, Terry turns to alcohol, which nearly destroys her. Fortunately, she meets Kevin Costner's Denny, a retired baseball coach and her new neighbor, who restores her faith in people, her zest for life, and helps her with her four daughters.
