The Witcher has been one of Netflix's most popular original series since its debut in 2019.

Now, its highly-anticipated next season is due for release later this year. However, fans are now wondering what to expect next from the show after the producers' recent comments about ignoring canon once again.

In a recent interview with Screenrant, The Witcher's VFX Supervisor, Sébastien Francoeur and producer, Graeme Marshall, spoke about the show's upcoming third season.

They revealed they are currently in the process of delivering the final couple of episodes. However, one statement stood out in particular, which claimed the next installment of the show will feature content that fans have "never seen or read before" in Witcher lore.

While this may excite some viewers, it's worth noting that this isn't the first time The Witcher has diverged from the source material.

In fact, the show's first two seasons have taken several creative liberties with the novels, much to the irritation of some die-hard Witcher fans. And while it's true that some degree of creative license is necessary when adapting a book to the screen, some feel that The Witcher series has taken that liberty way too far.

One such fan who believes the series is better off sticking to the source material is Geralt actor Henry Cavill himself. He has admitted to always being a superfan of the books and games. Which was the main reason he took the role in the first place.

However, his involvement in the series has consistently sparked rumors of disagreements behind the scenes. Mainly concerning Cavill pushing for further accuracy within the show and even, at times, disagreeing directly with the writers.

Cavill's dedication to the books and the show's accuracy has won him much support from fans. However, at the end of last year, Netflix announced the part of Geralt will be recast with Liam Hemsworth for its fourth season and beyond.

As soon as the news broke, theories on Cavill's departure from the show began to spread. Some believed it may be due to his commitments to other roles. Others instead were convinced it was over disagreements about the character's direction and story with the showrunners.

Considering the recent statements by Marshall regarding this upcoming season, it certainly doesn't bode well for the future of the series.

For the most part, it's clear that The Witcher's creative team is dedicated to staying true to the book's lore while exploring new storylines and ideas. However, whether or not they will be able to strike the right balance between the two remains to be seen.

For now, fans of The Witcher will have to wait patiently for Season 3 to see what new surprises are in store, and hopefully, a graceful exit for Witcher fan Henry Cavill in the process.
