Which are we most likely to see?

Filming for House of the Dragon season 2 is underway. And shortly before it commenced, co-creator Ryan Condal told The Hollywood Reporter “You’re going to meet 5 new dragons”.

Which begs the question, who are the 5 new dragons set to feature in the next season of House of the Dragon?

For the purposes of this article, we’re going to assume Sunfyre and Dreamfyre aren’t counted as ‘new’ even though we were only briefly introduced to them in season 1. And that makes these 5 the most likely candidates:

Tessarion

Tessarion was a stunning blue dragon with dark cobalt wings who breathed blue fire. By the time of the Dance of the Dragons, she was of fighting weight, but the smallest dragon available to supporters of Aegon II. However, she was agile and nimble. She bonded with Prince Daeron Targaryen.

Silverwing

As you might imagine, Silverwing was silver in colour. She was said to have hatched from an egg that was placed in Alysanne Targaryen’s cradle by Rhaena (her older sister) in 36 AC. She bonded with Alysanne who would ride Silverwing while accompanying her husband, King Jaehaerys, around his kingdom throughout his reign.

Jaehaerys rode Vermithor, who Silverwing frequently coiled with. She was a docile and friendly dragon.

Sheepstealer

Sheepstealer was not an elegant-looking dragon. He was an ugly brown colour and had a short temper. His name came from the fact he was partial to swooping in and stealing sheep which he would then devour. He wasn’t aggressive towards humans, however. And while he was known to occasionally eat a sheepdog, he never touched a shepherd.

He was a wild dragon and his only rider was a bastard girl called Nettles. Sheepstealer was said to be around 50 by the time she bonded with him. Nettles rode him alongside Daemon Targaryen and Caraxes while he searched for Aemond.

Grey Ghost

Grey Ghost was a shy dragon who did his best to keep out of the way of humans – hence the name. He was pale grey and never bonded with a rider. Like Sheepstealer, he was a wild dragon. He made his lair in a smoking vent high up in Dragonmont and was occasionally seen hunting for fish over the narrow sea.

Cannibal

The third of the wild dragons, Cannibal was the biggest and oldest. He was said to have been on Dragonstone even before the Targaryens landed there in 114 BC. He didn’t get on with the Targaryen dragons, with some saying this was because he was from a different lineage – although this was disputed by some Maesters. He was black and had green eyes.
