Lily Collins Comes from a Very Famous Family (but It Hasn't Been Easy to Handle)
Award-winning actor Lily Collins is known for her roles in Mirror Mirror, Emily in Paris and Growing Pains.
And, as revealed in her 2017 book, Unfiltered, she had a few growing pains of her own.
The child of Hollywood antique store owner Jill Taverman and legendary pop star Phil Collins, Lily grew up in a house in which celebs would just drop in for a cup of tea and says she simply saw the likes of Elton John as 'normal people with a lot of talent'.
But she was also well aware of the fact that details of her parents' relationship – including their divorce in 1996 – was public knowledge.
Phil and Jill met in 1980 when Collins was still touring with Genesis and married four years later at a ceremony in Guildford, the town in which Lily was born.
Originally a drummer, Phil took over as lead singer of Genesis when Peter Gabriel left to pursue a solo career. And Collins went on to forge a hugely successful solo singing career himself that saw hits including In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) and Another Day in Paradise.
Despite his success, though, Collins hasn't always been a favourite of the critics. And according to Guardian journalist Paul Lester, the singer wasn't shy about contacting them to complain about negative reviews.
Lily's mother, Jill, was Phil's second wife, and this was another fractious marriage that garnered media attention and saw him twice have affairs with another former drama school friend, Lavinia Lang.
Phil and Jill divorced in 1994, with the singer paying her £17 million as a settlement. Lily was just 5 at the time and says she was 'often angry' with her dad while she was a child.
'Because my dad was often gone, I never wanted to do anything that would make him stay away even longer. I missed him and wanted him there. I became extra careful about what I said and how I said it, afraid he’d think I was angry or didn’t love him. And the truth is, I was angry.'
That fear and anger affected her greatly: 'I’ve realized that many of my deepest insecurities stem from these issues with my dad. It’s taken me over a decade to resolve some of them (others I’m still resolving) and to finally build up the courage to speak my mind to him.'
Now famous herself, Lily is reluctant to speak about her own private life due to the experience of growing up in the public eye.
