The horror franchise isn’t done with you yet—fresh nightmares are already in the works.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is printing money, but if you were hoping big box office might buy the Warrens one more case, sorry. Even with 2025's horror crown in hand, this is still the farewell tour for Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as Ed and Lorraine.

Yes, this is the last ride for the Warrens

Director Michael Chaves is not hedging. He told ComicBook.com that Last Rites is the final time the Warrens lead a Conjuring movie — at least as protagonists.

"It is done. This is the final chapter... That's why we called it Last Rites. It's the last one. There's no other Conjuring movies. It is absolutely the end."

And he has been consistent about the why. Speaking to GamesRadar+ last month, Chaves said the team wanted to end the Warrens' story on their own terms instead of running the series into the ground. Love that clarity, especially in a franchise this profitable.

The money says 'keep going,' the plan says 'no'

For context: Last Rites has cleared over $477 million worldwide on a $55 million budget and opened to the biggest worldwide opening weekend ever for a horror release. Hard to imagine a studio walking away from that, right? But Chaves is drawing a line — his comments leave no room for a surprise comeback for the Warrens.

James Wan already set expectations

Franchise creator James Wan spent last year calling Last Rites the final Conjuring film and even framed it as the end of an era on Instagram. So this confirmation tracks with what he has been saying for a while.

The universe is not done scaring you

Ed and Lorraine may be exiting center stage, but The Conjuring world is still very much alive:

  • A Conjuring prequel is in development.
  • HBO has a Conjuring series on the way: announced in 2023, with Nancy Won recently boarding as showrunner.
  • Spinoffs like Annabelle and The Nun could keep rolling with more sequels, though nothing is officially greenlit yet.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is in theaters now.
