The Madison is already being hyped as one of the boldest expansions of the Yellowstone universe, and with two Hollywood heavyweights front and center, it's clear the series is gunning for event status.

Well, Taylor Sheridan went and did it again. Another Yellowstone spinoff, another A-list recruit. Snake Plissken himself is riding into Sheridan country: Kurt Russell is officially a series regular on The Madison.

So what is The Madison?

After more than a year of chatter linking Russell to this project, the deal is done. The Madison lives in Sheridan's Yellowstone universe and comes with a premise that is a lot more intimate than you might expect from the brand.

"A heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana."

That is the official logline, and yeah, it sounds like Sheridan aiming for something quieter and more emotional, with the Big Sky state as the backdrop.

The cast is stacked

Michelle Pfeiffer is headlining, and the ensemble is deep. Here is who is on board so far:

  • Michelle Pfeiffer
  • Kurt Russell (series regular)
  • Patrick J. Adams
  • Elle Chapman
  • Matthew Fox
  • Beau Garrett
  • Amiah Miller
  • Alaina Pollack
  • Ben Schnetzer
  • Rebecca Spence
  • Danielle Vasinova
  • Kevin Zegers

Who is Russell playing?

That part is still under wraps. The current belief is that he is playing the husband to Pfeiffer's character, but that has not been confirmed yet. Consider it well-informed speculation until Sheridan's camp says otherwise.

Big picture

At this point it feels like half of Hollywood has passed through Sheridan's universe, so Russell joining up is a flex even by those standards. The interesting wrinkle here is the tone: this one sounds less cattle and chaos, more grief and connection. Inside baseball note: Russell has been hovering around this spinoff for over a year, so the official word finally landing suggests The Madison is moving into active gear.

More as we get it.
