With the third Knives Out movie arriving this December, fans are already asking whether the Benoit Blanc mysteries will keep going beyond that.

Director Rian Johnson says he's open to it — but only if he can keep things creatively fresh.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson explained that he's determined to avoid falling into a formula:

"I don't have something in my head right now. You kind of burn the ship into the sea each time and ask yourself, 'How will I make anything ever again?' But I would keep doing them as long as I can."

Johnson has already delivered two hit entries — Knives Out and Glass Onion — both featuring Daniel Craig's detective Benoit Blanc unraveling new murder cases with an all-star cast of suspects. The next film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, arrives December 12, 2025 on Netflix, and it's expected to get a limited theatrical release as well. That's partly due to Daniel Craig himself pushing for more time in theaters, after being "saddened" by the short release window Glass Onion received.

What we know about Wake Up Dead Man so far:

  • Release date: December 12, 2025
  • Platform: Netflix, with limited theatrical release likely
  • Cast:
    • Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc
    • Josh O'Connor as Rev. Jud Duplenticy
    • Glenn Close (role undisclosed)

Johnson has hinted that this third film will be the darkest in the series, but as for a Knives Out 4, he says it all depends on finding the right mystery — and not repeating himself.

Given Netflix's $450 million deal for the franchise back in 2021, a fourth film seems like a matter of when, not if. But for now, Johnson's just focused on getting this next one right.
