Keep On With Fan Theories, Cause Cruel Summer Showrunner Definitely Sees Them
After all, fan theories are part of the Cruel Summer experience.
Thanks to its gripping premiere season, Cruel Summer has garnered a sizable fandom that is now intensely absorbing and debating each new episode of Season 2, currently airing on Freeform.
The story of three teenagers caught up in a dark mystery that could ruin their lives strikes a chord with many viewers, and people can't help but share their ideas online, trying to make sense of the show's plot.
Who killed Luke? Who made and leaked the sex tape? What happened to Megan's pregnancy? What's Isabella all about? Cruel Summer's new story is giving rise to numerous fan theories that are circulating all over social media. And if you're keen to contribute to the discussion, be sure that you're not theorizing in vain.
Season 2 showrunner Elle Triedman recently revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she dives into social media after every episode to read fan posts and theories.
'I lurk. I lurk on East Coast Twitter sometimes. I love how engaged everyone is. I love seeing people's reactions in real time,' the showrunner said. 'The fans are fierce.'
Triedman added that it's 'kind of fun' to read what people think will happen and see how they understand the logic and meaning behind some of the twists. So far, the new season has been so compelling that it has even inspired fan theories in the creator's own social circle.
'[I] have friends and people texting me while they're watching saying, "I think this person did it!" I'm like, "I'm not gonna say anything,"' she recalled in the interview.
Such an effect is natural since Triedman herself is a fan of Cruel Summer. The writer said that before she took over as showrunner, she watched Season 1 and really enjoyed it. So when she came in, Triedman tried to create an equally immersive but different story.
'I hope [fans are] surprised. I hope they're well-satisfied. And because it's the nature of our audience, I hope they have lots of their own theories as well,' the showrunner replied when asked about her aspirations for the rest of the season.
So if you have a theory about what happened in Cruel Summer Season 2, don't hold back. There's a good chance the creator will read it.
Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 6 lands on Freeform July 3, 2023.
