Forty years on, The Goonies sequel is finally gathering steam: Ke Huy Quan says the second draft is in.

The Goonies 2 is not just wishful thinking anymore. After decades of rumors, we finally have real movement, and yes, it involves Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus, and a fresh draft of the script that just landed.

Where things stand right now

  • Ke Huy Quan says the second draft of the script has been turned in. He heard the latest directly from Steven Spielberg at an event and walked away feeling genuinely optimistic.
  • Writer Potsy Ponciroli (Greedy People) revealed last summer that his first draft was very well received and his second draft was 95 percent done at the time. Now, per Quan, draft two is officially in.
  • As of February 14, 2025, the sequel was announced to be in development, with Spielberg and Chris Columbus producing alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario. No director is attached yet.
  • Lauren Shuler Donner, the late Richard Donner's widow, is on board as an executive producer.
  • No release date, casting, or plot details have been locked yet, but the original cast is interested. More on that below.

Ke Huy Quan is fired up, and he wants to bring friends

Quan, who played Data in the 1985 classic, told ComicBook while promoting Zootopia 2 that he recently connected with Spielberg and got the kind of update fans have been waiting for: the second draft is in, and the team likes where it is. He also joked that he told his Zootopia co-star Fortune Feimster he wants her in the sequel. The man is recruiting.

"I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event and he was so excited... I read the second draft was turned in and they are really happy about it. I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters."

The script: positive vibes from Venice to now

Ponciroli said during a panel at the Venice Film Festival in August that his first pass was warmly received and that the second draft was almost finished at the time. Cut to now: Quan says draft two has officially been delivered, which lines up with Ponciroli's earlier timeline. For fans worried about sequels-for-sequels-sake, Ponciroli gets it. He says he would never try to redo The Goonies, and that as a superfan, he sees this as a continuation of a story that never really ended.

So who is actually making this thing?

Spielberg and Columbus are producing, not directing. They are joined by producers Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario. There is no director attached yet. Lauren Shuler Donner is executive producing in the wake of Richard Donner's passing in 2021.

Cast: who is in, who is game

Nothing is official, but it is hard to imagine a new Goonies without Quan, especially given how enthusiastic he is. Corey Feldman has said he and Josh Brolin would be up for it, and he has name-checked Sean Astin too: basically, everyone is in good shape and still game. Years back, Feldman and Astin even brought a sequel idea to Richard Donner. He loved the concept, but the price tag was too high at the time.

What might the story be?

No plot is confirmed. Feldman has said Donner once told him he preferred a smaller, character-first approach that checked in on where these people are now rather than trying to top the original with bigger set pieces. That feels like the most obvious path, but until the script locks and a director signs on, consider it informed speculation.

If you want to revisit the original while we wait, The Goonies is streaming on Netflix.
