Turns out, Jurassic World: Rebirth almost had a moment that would've blown the franchise straight into Rule 34 territory.

According to screenwriter David Koepp, one draft of the film featured dinosaurs… mating. Yes, really. And no, you're not hallucinating.

In an interview with IndieWire, Koepp casually revealed that he once wrote a full-on dinosaur sex scene into the script. When asked about a moment where two dinosaurs appeared to be getting cozy, Koepp confirmed:

"It's lovely! It was tricky to write because, you know, how much of a mating scene are we talking about? How Jurassic Pork are we going to go with this?"

Pressed for clarification, Koepp added:

"There certainly is. In one draft of the script I wrote, 'They approach the dinosaurs in the field. Let's just put it this way, they have eight legs between them, but only six are on the ground.'"

Shockingly, that scene didn't survive to the final cut. But given the early reviews, maybe it should've.

Critics aren't exactly raving about Rebirth. JoBlo's Chris Bumbray called the film:

"Duller than Dominion, with less action, fewer scenes for its stars, and a flat visual style."

He went on to say the film is so underwhelming it's not even getting an IMAX release. Instead, those premium screens are being saved for Formula 1 footage and Superman, because even dinosaurs can't compete with fast cars and capes these days.

And while Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla) is a talented director, Bumbray said Rebirth feels more like his "lifeless Godzilla reboot" than any of his better work.

For the record, Koepp seems to have enjoyed returning to the franchise after decades away, saying:

"I was afraid of going in and feeling like a sad sack trying to recapture a feeling I had 30 years ago… but within a few days of starting writing, it was totally appropriate. I really like that feeling."

But no amount of creative rejuvenation could save the dino love scene. Whether that's a loss or a mercy is up for debate.

One thing's certain: if Jurassic World: Rebirth wanted to stand out in a summer of IP overload, this would've done it. Instead, we're left with a muted, dinosaur-free-of-passion sequel that's struggling to justify its own existence.

Bullet points for the curious:

  • Scene cut: Dinosaur mating, described as "eight legs, six on the ground."
  • David Koepp quote: "How Jurassic Pork are we going to go with this?"
  • Critic reaction: "Dull," "flat," "not worth an IMAX release."
  • No IMAX rollout: F1 and Superman took the screens instead.
