It's been almost three years since Bridgerton made its debut to become one of Netflix's prime shows, but its popularity with worldwide audiences hasn't faltered just a bit. Based on the eponymous novel series by Julia Quinn, the steamy romance period drama has featured a variety of talented actors throughout its two-season run. Yet, no Bridgerton actor is as universally beloved as heartthrob Jonathan Bailey.
Portraying Anthony Bridgerton, the ultimate fan favorite of the entire show, the actor has risen to enormous fame. Now, he's starring in a new miniseries on Showtime, titled Fellow Travelers. And recently, Bailey has said he would love his Bridgerton fans to appreciate this current work of his as well.
Fellow Travelers
The new Showtime show, which premiered almost a month ago, follows two closeted gay politicians from their accidental encounter in Washington D.C. in the 1950s through their lives as they navigate the perils and complexities of being queer and the various political turmoil affecting the US. Joining Jonathan Bailey as the show's star, Tim Laughlin, Fellow Travelers stars Matt Bomer of White Collar and AHS fame as Hawkins Fuller.
Why J. Bailey Wants His Fans to Watch the New Show?
'I knew that what I thought was fascinating about Tim is that I'd never seen… I wanted to explore the, sort of, pain and the discomfort in his own skin and that I'd seen these sorts of characters that were, sort of, doe-eyed, soft, and, sort of, overly generous characters. And I wanted… I just felt with him instinctively [that] he was a very complicated character. And also, it was a complete one-eighty from Anthony Bridgerton,' the actor said of his new role in an interview.
Apparently, the Bridgerton star wants his fans to see him from a different perspective, which Fellow Travelers offers. But most importantly, the actor feels it's important to tell this story to show other people the hurt and fears that queer people have faced throughout history.
'That, you know, more than anything, is a great thrill to be able to go from a straight lead to gay romance and to bring as many Bridgerton fans along with you for the ride as you can. That to me feels political. I think, anyone who accepted this job [Fellow Travelers], anyone who greenlit this job, anyone who's watching this job, and anyone who's supporting this story – it's a political act. And that feels to me always the most grounding thing when choosing work and stories to tell,' Bailey continued.
Fellow Travelers' fifth episode is set to premiere on 26th November.
