Jon Hamm Confirms What We Knew All Along About Tom Cruise's On-Set Behavior
It was a 'delight'.
Perhaps best known for starring as Don Draper in Mad Men, Jon Hamm has an impressive acting CV – including playing Vice Admiral Beau 'Cyclone' Simpson opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick.
Cruise, of course, is in another league when it comes to celebrity status. So, what did Hamm make of working alongside one of the most famous faces on the planet and bona fide Hollywood legend?
He loved it!
Speaking to Bill Maher on Club Random, Hamm said how he received a call from Cruise shortly after he accepted the role – with the Maverick actor telling him that he couldn't wait for the two of them to get together on-set. What surprised Hamm about the call more than anything was that his character had so little screen time in the movie
Maher, a consummate professional, told Hamm that the scenes he appeared in were 'good ones,' to which Hamm replied that he 'loved every minute of it'.
He went on to describe how Tom Cruise 'is not the kind of guy who doesn't...look after every detail in a movie', explaining that 'there is nothing on-set that Tom doesn't want there'.
He described his experience of shooting with and under the direction of Tom Cruise as being so enjoyable because of the way he 'curates an experience'. Overall, he said working with Cruise was " 'delightful' and that while some actors with a lot of experience sometimes get the 'f**k you, you figure it out' treatment on set, Cruise was 'was not that guy.'
And, according to Hamm, it wasn't just other celebs who benefitted from Cruise's time on set.
'I watched how he took care of all the younger actors,' Hamm said, 'and was very aware that, [for] a lot of them [it] was maybe their first movie—certainly their first major motion picture.'
It's been well documented that some people in showbiz can turn out to be divas who believe their own hype. There are even occasions when a celeb seems to believe they're far bigger and more popular than they really are.
Tom Cruise is acting royalty. He's been around for a long time and starred in some of the biggest movies of all time. Were he to have gone down the diva route, you could easily see why he would have done that. But he didn't. And by all accounts he's just a nice guy who happens to be mega wealthy and one of the biggest stars on the planet.
