Johnny Depp finally addresses a Captain Jack Sparrow comeback, revealing his stance on returning to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean at the Beverly Hills premiere of his new film Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness.

Captain Jack Sparrow might not be completely dead in the water. Johnny Depp just gave a tiny, coy answer about Pirates of the Caribbean, and of course that was enough to set the internet on fire.

What he said

At the Beverly Hills premiere of his new film Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness (yes, that title is a lot), someone in the crowd told Depp they were still hoping for another Pirates movie. His response:

"That'd be fun."

Not exactly a confirmation. Not a denial either. It is, however, the kind of light tap on the door that keeps hope alive for fans who want more Jack Sparrow.

Where the franchise stands

Depp first swaggered into the role in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, then came back for four sequels. The last one, Dead Men Tell No Tales, hit in 2017, and since then the franchise has been in a holding pattern.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said they are still working on a script for the next entry and that Depp coming back would come down to the writing. As he put it:

"If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it. It's all about what's on the page, as we all know."

Disney, for its part, has made no official announcements about the future of Pirates or Depp's involvement (via Entertainment Weekly).

What Depp is doing in the meantime

He is focused on other projects. He directed Modì, which features Al Pacino, and he is set to step in front of the camera again for a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol.
