Jerry Bruckheimer Teases What’s Next for Top Gun 3, Heat 2, and The Rock Sequel
Jerry Bruckheimer lights up the slate, teasing progress on Top Gun 3 with Tom Cruise, Michael Mann’s Heat 2, and a long-rumored sequel to The Rock.
Jerry Bruckheimer hopped on HeyUGuys and actually gave some real updates on three sequels people keep asking about: Top Gun 3, Heat 2, and a maybe The Rock 2. Short version: two are moving, one is still a dream. Longer version below.
The Rock 2: Not dead, not alive, just... out there
Asked where Nicolas Cage's character from Michael Bay's 1996 thriller The Rock (co-starring Sean Connery) is these days, Bruckheimer kept it vague but cheeky.
"Uh, he’s out there, somewhere. It’d be nice to try and find Stanley and make another one. They’re hard to do, let me tell you."
Translation: he likes the idea of revisiting Stanley Goodspeed, but there is no active sequel in the pipeline. A follow-up has been talked about for years, but nothing is officially happening.
Heat 2: Cameras could roll in August, with DiCaprio on board
This is the one with momentum. Bruckheimer says Michael Mann's Heat 2 is aiming to start shooting in August, if everything snaps into place. He confirmed Leonardo DiCaprio is attached and called him one of the key pieces of the project, right alongside Mann himself.
Bruckheimer also raved about Mann's novel 'Heat 2' and the script based on it, and tossed in a bit of history: he produced Mann's first feature, Thief, and they go way back to the days of helping Mann get that movie off the ground. That long-running partnership is very much part of the pitch here.
Top Gun 3: Still cooking, with Cruise in the room
On the Top Gun front, Bruckheimer says the third movie is in development and the team is working through the screenplay now. He has been meeting with Tom Cruise, and the hope is to pull it together soon. No dates yet, just active development.
Where it all stands
- Heat 2: Targeting an August start of production; Leonardo DiCaprio attached; based on Mann's 'Heat 2' novel; Bruckheimer producing; no release date yet.
- Top Gun 3: Script in progress; meetings happening with Tom Cruise; Bruckheimer expects it to come together 'hopefully soon'; no release date yet.
- The Rock sequel: Bruckheimer likes the idea of finding Stanley Goodspeed again, but there is no formal green light or announcement.
