Before teaming with Robert Pattinson in Die My Love, The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence chased a role in Twilight — and left the audition empty‑handed. Years later, she tells Variety her only revenge was finally sharing the screen with Pattinson.

Jennifer Lawrence once auditioned to play Bella Swan. She didn’t even get a call back. Now she’s finally sharing the screen with Robert Pattinson in Die My Love and joking that this is the little full-circle payback she wanted all along. Honestly, that arc kind of rules.

The Twilight audition that went nowhere

Back in 2008, before anyone knew her as Katniss, Lawrence tried out for Bella in Twilight. On The Rewatchables podcast in 2023, she said it could not have gone worse, career-wise, at the time.

'They turned me down immediately. I didn’t even get a callback.'

She also told Variety that finally working with Pattinson now feels like the only 'revenge' she ever wanted after that miss: 'Yeah, it’s the total revenge that I’ve wanted.'

Who else chased Bella (and who actually got it)

It was a crowded field. Plenty of familiar names read for Bella before the role went to Kristen Stewart:

  • Lily Collins
  • Michelle Trachtenberg
  • Emily Browning
  • Sara Paxton
  • Jennifer Lawrence

The rejection that changed her lane

Not landing Twilight pushed Lawrence toward a better fit. She soon auditioned for The Hunger Games, landed Katniss Everdeen, and that became the big break. The YA franchise turned her into a household name, with Francis Lawrence directing multiple installments. From there, she kept mixing it up: Passengers, Mother!, Red Sparrow, and plenty more. In hindsight, missing Bella was a fork-in-the-road moment that set her on the path that actually made sense for her.

Fast-forward to Die My Love

Lawrence and Pattinson finally team up in Die My Love, a drama about a couple fraying at the edges as her character battles postpartum depression. Early reactions have been generally positive, and the pairing alone is intriguing: the almost-Bella and the original Edward, together at last, but in something far gnarlier than a vampire romance.

Die My Love opens in U.S. theaters on November 7, 2025.
