Jennifer Lawrence Almost Bailed on Her Wedding To Cooke Maroney
Jennifer Lawrence is one of the highest-paid and in-demand actresses in Hollywood, but she's always kept her romantic life pretty quiet.
The star of The Hunger Games and American Hustle has been married to art dealer and gallerist Cooke Maroney since 2019. The couple has a child, and Lawrence speaks glowingly of their life together. However, there was a time just before their wedding when she nearly called it all off.
Lawrence and Maroney started dating in 2018 after being introduced by a mutual friend. Lawrence had to make a few adjustments to dating someone who didn't belong in the world of Hollywood. She told Vanity Fair that on their first dates,
'I was so embarrassed to bring my [security guard]... I mean, how mortifying would that have been? So I didn't, and it made me really nervous the first few times, and it turned out totally fine.'
A year later, Lawrence was spotted rocking a diamond ring, and it was confirmed that she and Maroney were engaged. During an episode of the podcast 'Naked with Catt Sadler', Lawrence was confident that she had made the right decision. She described her fiance as 'The One', and noted:
'I definitely wasn't at a place where I was like, 'I'm ready to get married.' I just met Cooke and I wanted to marry him. We wanted to marry each other, we wanted to commit fully and he's my best friend and so I want to legally bind him to me forever.'
However, her love for Maroney didn't mean that Lawrence went into marriage totally confident. In fact, she later stated that she developed cold feet in the days before her wedding. It sounds like the actress didn't have doubts about her love for Maroney, but the seriousness of the commitment gave her pause. In an interview with the New York Times, Lawrence revealed:
'When you don't fully know yourself, you have no idea where to put yourself…I was like, "[Marriage] feels right, but what if it's not?"'
Luckily Lawrence went ahead with the wedding, a decision that she says was absolutely the right one. She continued:
'I'm so happy I didn't freak out and cancel the wedding and run away and go, "I'll never be taken down!"'
In October 2019 the couple tied the knot in a small and intimate ceremony in Rhode Island. They welcomed their first child, Cy, in 2022.
