James Gunn Still Has No Idea When the Lanterns Teaser Drops
Even DC Studios' boss is still in the dark on when fans will finally get their first look at Lanterns.
With Peacemaker (John Cena) left stranded after his second season, DC is moving the spotlight to Lanterns next. New ring slingers, big mythology, and yes, it is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's connected DCU. One catch: even Gunn does not know when you will actually see it.
Who is wearing the ring?
Aaron Pierre is stepping in as John Stewart, one of the Green Lantern Corps' most beloved heavy hitters. He is paired with Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, the old pro who has been called the greatest Lantern of them all. It is the next chapter of the DCU and it is headed to HBO Max.
So when do we get a first look?
Gunn says he has seen an early peek, but scheduling the public reveal is out of his lane. He talked about it on BobaTalks and was pretty blunt about the TV marketing side living with HBO, not him.
"I've seen the peek, I think, or at least where it is now but I have no clue when that's planned to be shown."
"I'm equally involved with the actual materials that you're seeing for the television shows, but in terms of the scheduling, I'm not as knowledgeable as I am with film."
How it fits into the bigger DCU
Gunn called John Stewart and Hal Jordan important to the DCU, not just for this first season, but for what they set up long-term. In other words, this is not a one-and-done. Think of it the way he talks about Peacemaker: the character matters, and the ripple effects matter.
When and where
Lanterns is set to land on HBO Max early next year. No teaser date yet, but Gunn has seen where things stand, and the marketing rollout will be on HBO's timetable.
