James Gunn shuts down a Man of Tomorrow casting rumor, cutting through the chatter with a firm no. The follow-up to 2025’s Superman, which he directs, brings back David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Another day, another DCU rumor shot down by James Gunn himself. If you saw chatter that Steve Trevor might pop up in Gunn's next Superman movie, go ahead and erase that from your bingo card.

What kicked this off

This all started when scooper Daniel Richtman claimed there is a "major new male character" being cast for 'Man of Tomorrow'. Fans did what fans do and quickly connected dots to either Steve Trevor (because Wonder Woman rumors are floating around) or maybe even Batman.

"Nope."

That was Gunn, on Threads, responding specifically to the Steve Trevor speculation. Worth noting: he swatted down Steve. He did not confirm or deny Batman in that reply.

Why fans landed on Steve Trevor

There have been unconfirmed whispers that Wonder Woman could appear in 'Man of Tomorrow'. In the comics, Steve Trevor is often Diana's closest ally and a frequent love interest, so the math kind of does itself. But as of now, nobody involved with the movie has confirmed Wonder Woman is in it, and Gunn just ruled out Steve. So, temper expectations.

The movie itself

'Man of Tomorrow' is the follow-up to 2025's 'Superman' and is directed by James Gunn for DC Studios and Warner Bros. David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are back as Superman/Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. The film opens in U.S. theaters on July 9, 2027.

  • Title: 'Man of Tomorrow' (DC Studios/WB)
  • Release date: July 9, 2027 (U.S.)
  • Director: James Gunn
  • Returning cast: David Corenswet (Superman/Clark Kent), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor)
  • The rumor: A "major new male character" is being cast; fans guessed Steve Trevor or Batman
  • Gunn's response on Steve Trevor: "Nope"
  • Wonder Woman cameo: Rumored, not confirmed by anyone attached
  • Context: 'Superman' (2025) is the first DC Studios feature in the new DCU and the second overall entry after 'Creature Commandos' Season 1
  • Where to watch 'Superman' now: Streaming on Max

Studio positioning for 'Superman' is pretty straightforward: Gunn's take aims for big-scale action with humor and heart, centered on a Superman driven by compassion. If you want a taste of the new DCU vibe before 'Man of Tomorrow' lands, that's your primer.

Bottom line: cross Steve Trevor off your 'Man of Tomorrow' speculation list. Everything else? Still in play until Gunn says otherwise.
