James Gunn told Entertainment Weekly after this week’s episode that GI Robot, the purpose-built Nazi killer voiced by Sean Gunn in the animated series Creature Commandos, is not about to stomp into the final two episodes and tidy things up. He did confirm the character will show up in the DCU, just not where or when you’re expecting.
"Yes, but not necessarily when you think you’re going to see him... not necessarily in Peacemaker season 2."
Why everyone suddenly wanted him
The fan wish list kicked into overdrive after the episode 6 twist: Christopher Smith (John Cena) tries to escape his mess by starting over on another Earth, only to find out he landed on Earth X. If you’re not deep into DC lore, that’s the timeline where the Nazis won World War II and kept expanding their control worldwide. Hence the flags with swastikas where stars should be, and why Peacemaker’s best friend Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) is immediately in danger as the only person of color who accidentally wandered into that reality completely unaware of what she was stepping into. Grim place to reboot your life, to put it mildly.
The breadcrumbs and the freak-out
Some sharp-eyed viewers had already clocked the differences pointing to Earth X before the reveal. Gunn says he expected that might happen. He screened the whole season for a bunch of people from different backgrounds and, according to him, nobody noticed the twist coming — until episode 6 hit and they absolutely lost it. Meanwhile, folks discussing the show online either spotted the clues early or saw someone else connect the dots and got there ahead of the episode.
What happens now
Bottom line: GI Robot exists, he’s coming, but not to bail out Peacemaker in season 2. For now, it’s Peacemaker and the 11th Street Gang versus an entire fascist Earth as the season keeps rolling on HBO Max. Fingers crossed they make it out of there in one piece.
