James Gunn Says Revealing His Spotify Wrapped Would Spoil Man of Tomorrow
James Gunn’s Spotify Wrapped is on lockdown — the director says his most-played tracks double as the soundtrack to Man of Tomorrow, so he’s keeping the list under wraps to avoid spoiling the new Superman film.
James Gunn just turned his Spotify Wrapped into a movie spoiler warning, which is very on-brand for him and honestly kind of hilarious. The short version: his most-played songs are basically the soundtrack to his next Superman movie, so he is not sharing them.
'I can't post my top songs because they are ALL in Man of Tomorrow, but I can post some of the other stuff.'
What he did reveal from Wrapped
- Top artists: Foxy Shazam (for the second year running), Sports Team, Jeff Rosenstock, and LaRussel
- Spotify claims his 'listening age' is 26 and slotted him into 'Club Serotonin' with the role 'Collector'
- He shared a playlist he calls 'Spotify Wrapped Abridged' that deliberately leaves out anything from Man of Tomorrow and Peacemaker
If you were hoping for a cheeky needle-drop of 3 Doors Down's 'Kryptonite' in the new movie, Gunn shut that down instantly. A fan asked, he replied: 'Not gonna happen.'
What that means for Man of Tomorrow
Gunn flat-out saying his top songs are in the film is a pretty loud hint that Man of Tomorrow is going to be stacked with needle-drops. That tracks with how he likes to work when he gets the chance to build a soundtrack around character and vibe. Think Guardians of the Galaxy or Peacemaker more than his last Superman movie.
For comparison, Superman leaned hard on its score and only sprinkled in a few tracks. One example: Noah and the Whale's '5 Years Time' during a Mr. Terrific scene. The score itself was handled mostly by John Murphy and David Fleming. So if Superman kept the jukebox in the corner, Man of Tomorrow sounds like it's dragging it back to the center of the room.
Gunn and music: still inseparable
This is his thing. He curates needle-drops the way some directors obsess over lenses. Peacemaker is a great example: Season 2 even worked in Steel Panther's 'F---ing My Heart in the Ass.' So yeah, him building a whole movie around the songs he rinsed all year feels very Gunn.
Release and production timeline
Warner Bros. has Man of Tomorrow dated for July 9, 2027, with cameras set to roll in summer 2026.
