James Gunn drops fresh DCU updates — including Clayface and the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow — while saying his DC Studios co-CEO grind is anything but average in a new Threads post.

If you have ever wondered what James Gunn actually does all day as DC Studios co-boss, he just laid it out — and yeah, he is juggling a lot. He jumped on Instagram's Threads and rattled off where things stand across Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns, Clayface, and The Batman: Part II. Some of it is expected. Some of it is a surprisingly hands-on peek behind the curtain.

'There is no average day.'

What Gunn says he is doing right now

On the Superman front, Gunn says he is deep in the weeds on the sequel, 'Man of Tomorrow' — think storyboards, department meetings, and the unglamorous-but-critical stuff like location scouting and casting. The big villain? Brainiac. So yes, the blue-skinned collector of cities is finally stepping into the main spotlight.

He also says he is currently reviewing cuts of both 'Supergirl' and the HBO series 'Lanterns,' while simultaneously figuring out how to position and market those projects. Over in Gotham, he is 'supporting the Batman 2 crew' to help Matt Reeves' next film run smoothly. And for 'Clayface,' Gunn says he has not seen a cut yet — he is still waiting on the first assembly.

The DC Studios slate, at a glance

  • Supergirl (June 26, 2026) - Milly Alcock leads as Kara Zor-El. The story pairs her with a young Ruthye Marye Knoll on a revenge quest. Gunn is reviewing cuts and mapping the marketing.
  • Clayface (September 11, 2026) - Tom Rhys Harries stars as Matt Hagen/Clayface. Script by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Gunn says he is waiting to see the first cut.
  • Lanterns (2026 on HBO, date TBA) - Green Lantern series starring Kyle Chandler (Hal Jordan), Aaron Pierre (John Stewart), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), plus Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, and more. Gunn is watching cuts and shaping the rollout.
  • Man of Tomorrow (July 9, 2027) - The 'Superman' sequel with Brainiac as the central villain. Gunn is in storyboard meetings, scouting, and casting.
  • The Batman: Part II (October 1, 2027) - Gunn says he is actively backing the team to keep production running smoothly as Reeves moves forward.

Quick take

The interesting part here is how hands-on Gunn is with both creative and the less flashy stuff like marketing. He is literally bouncing from storyboards to rough cuts to scheduling and ad plans. Also notable: 'Clayface' being far enough along that a first cut is imminent, while 'Man of Tomorrow' is still in the nuts-and-bolts phase of building the movie. And for anyone keeping track of villains, Brainiac finally getting top billing is a big swing — and long overdue.
