It Follows 2 Star Hints The Release Date Is Closer Than You Think
Maika Monroe revives the curse: They Follow, the long-awaited sequel to It Follows, is set to roll cameras soon, with a release timeline finally locked in.
After years of will-they-won't-they, the It Follows sequel is finally on the runway. Maika Monroe says They Follow starts filming this summer, which is the clearest, cleanest update this project has had since it was announced.
What Maika Monroe just confirmed
Onstage at SXSW, Monroe kept it simple:
'We are filming the sequel this summer.'
That dovetails with what the team has been trying to do for a while now, after earlier plans slipped.
How we got here
The sequel first became official in 2023, reuniting Maika Monroe with writer-director David Robert Mitchell, with NEON backing the project. The original 2014 film was one of that year's standout horror releases, the kind that stuck around in your head and on critics' year-end lists. Monroe broke out as Jay Height, the young woman at the center of a curse that spreads through intimacy and refuses to stop chasing.
Production was initially targeted for 2024, but scheduling snarls pushed everything back. Now the cast and crew are aiming for cameras to roll in summer 2026.
Where Jay is now
Monroe has talked about stepping back into Jay more than a decade later, calling it wild and oddly moving to see where the character has landed. The new film widens the threat that stalked Jay, taking that bone-deep dread and scaling it up.
'It’s not at all what I expected, where you would find Jay, which I thought was really interesting,' Monroe said earlier this year. 'I was like, Whoa! Cool, which I think the audience will probably have a similar reaction.'
When to expect it
If filming really does kick off this summer, a 2027 release is a reasonable bet. Horror this precise takes time, and this one has already waited long enough. At least now we know when the chase begins again.
