More than a decade after Twilight faded, Robert Pattinson still can’t outrun Edward Cullen. In Vanity Fair’s Lie Detector Test with Jennifer Lawrence, he was pressed on whether he’d ever return to the role — and his answer might surprise fans.

More than a decade after Twilight wrapped, Robert Pattinson still can’t dodge vampire questions. Case in point: during Vanity Fair’s lie detector bit with Jennifer Lawrence, someone asked if he’d ever suit up as Edward Cullen again. He said yes... in the most Pattinson way possible, joking about stealing roles from younger actors and wanting to play 17 again. He was obviously kidding, but the fact that this is still coming up tells you everything about the series’ staying power.

Pattinson on Twilight’s staying power

For all the post-Twilight cred he’s earned (The Lighthouse, Good Time, The Batman), Twilight hangs around like glitter on a black T-shirt. Pattinson knows it, and he’s oddly charmed by it. Speaking to Extra, he put it this way:

"It’s amazing. I can’t believe the cultural legs that movie has had ... just mind-blowing to me. It’s so cool ... I get asked about it every single day ... I have such fond memories about the whole thing. I’m so grateful for it."

Would he play Edward again?

Short version: not seriously. The lie detector gag gave him a chance to deadpan about taking jobs from younger actors and reliving eternal high school, which is very him. But there’s no real plan for a Twilight return. If he does go fangs again, it would more likely be via something like Chloe Zhao’s rumored Dracula project, which has floated his name in the whisper mill.

How the movies actually scored

If you’re wondering how the saga fared with critics and fans over time, here’s the quick snapshot the internet loves to argue about:

  • Twilight (2008): IMDb 5.3; Rotten Tomatoes 48% critics / 72% audience
  • The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009): IMDb 4.8; 28% critics / 61% audience
  • The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010): IMDb 5.1; 46% critics / 60% audience
  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011): IMDb 5.2; 26% critics / 60% audience
  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (2012): IMDb 5.6; 49% critics / 70% audience

Oh, and Jennifer Lawrence once auditioned to be Bella

Before Kristen Stewart landed Bella Swan, a pre-Hunger Games Jennifer Lawrence went in for the role. It was not a close call. As she’s said, she was turned down immediately and didn’t even get a callback. That sliding-doors moment came full circle in a fun way: Lawrence and Pattinson now share the screen in Die My Love, where she delivers one of her best performances.

Where to watch

The Twilight Saga is currently streaming on Hulu in the US. Die My Love is in theaters now.
