Taron Egerton just threw ice on the 007 buzz, telling Rolling Stone AU/NZ he isn’t the right fit to don the tux—strongly hinting the Bond hunt will move on without him.

If you were still picturing Taron Egerton sliding into a tux and ordering something shaken, you can let that fantasy go. He pretty much took himself out of the 007 sweepstakes over the weekend, and he did it in the most straightforward way possible.

Egerton on Bond: Thanks, but no thanks

Asked about the evergreen Bond rumors at Tropfest, Egerton did not hedge.

'I don't think I'm right for James Bond. I've never felt that that was me.'

He stressed he respects the franchise and thinks there are plenty of strong contenders, but said his career path feels less grand and idealized than what comes with being the guy behind the Walther PPK.

'I don't think I'm a good choice for it... I think I'm too messy for that... It would be wasted on me, probably.'

So who is in the mix?

The hunt for the next 007 is moving along. Two names that keep coming up: Callum Turner and Jacob Elordi. Nothing locked, but that’s the chatter right now.

Where Bond 26 stands

  • Director: Denis Villeneuve is set to helm the next Bond movie (working title: Bond 26).
  • Script: Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is writing.
  • Producers: Amy Pascal and David Heyman are attached.
  • Who’s steering the franchise: Amazon MGM Studios now holds creative control. In February 2025, Eon’s Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli handed the reins to Amazon — a pretty big shift for a series long run by Eon.
  • Timeline: No start date yet. The current buzz points to a late 2026 or early 2027 shoot, which puts a release in 2028 if everything clicks.

Bottom line: Egerton’s out by his own choice, the shortlist keeps evolving, and the new Bond era is lining up behind a heavyweight creative team and a notably different power structure. Stay tuned — the next tux fitting could be a while.
