Season 3 may take a fantasy turn.

Summary

  • In the OMFD S2 finale, the Revenge crew got a bunch of recruits
  • However, a fan-favorite character was killed off
  • Fans are furious, but there is still a chance their favorite pirate might yet return

While the finale of Our Flag Means Death exuded a lot of positive energy, the emphasis on Ed and Stede overshadowed all other storylines, leaving them unresolved. It remains uncertain if OFMD will be renewed for a third season, but even if HBO decides to do so, some fans may not return, feeling massively let down by the death of a character we grew to love over the first two seasons.

But don't go jumping to conclusions just yet, fellow seafarers, because despite what we've seen on screen, there's still a possibility that he might be alive. And no, not just in purgatory like Captain Hornigold.

Disgraceful Sendoff for Popular Pirate

Many of us watched the finale with tears streaming down our faces, and they were not tears of joy. For all the new recruits, the Revenge suffered an irreplaceable loss. After Ricky Banes injured Izzy Hands, he bled to death on the deck in Ed's arms following an incredibly poignant monologue.

Furious Fans

Main character deaths are rare on OFMD, so fans were taken aback by this twist. Indeed, in the first season, many of us genuinely despised Izzy, as he not only thwarted Ed's attempts to improve but also openly harassed the members of the Revenge crew.

But Con O'Neill's character underwent a remarkable transformation in Season 2, likely more than any other on the show. He appeared to be a lost cause, kept alive solely by his affection for Ed. However, after realizing that it was Stede, not him, who enabled Ed to see the humanity within himself, he quietly accepted it and became an invaluable member of the crew and a mentor to all.

Is There a Chance for a Comeback?

That's why Izzy's death felt unnecessarily abrupt and clichéd, serving only to amplify the drama. But perhaps that's what Jenkins and the writers intended: after all, everyone's favorite pirate could return to the show in Season 3.

It's unlikely to mirror the return of Lucius (a prime example of some characters coming back to life) as the crew buried Izzy. However, in one of the final scenes, we saw a seagull land on his grave marker, an apparent nod to Buttons' transformation. Yes, the plot veered toward a more comedic fantasy this season, but does it matter if it could mean Izzy's resurrection? So, hopefully, Buttons will be Izzy's deus ex machina.
