Is Reba McEntire's Iconic Sitcom Getting a Reboot? Here's What We Know So Far
The legendary country singer is making another show for NBC.
Summary
- Reba was one of the most popular sitcoms of the early 2000s.
- The show has been rumored to be rebooted for years.
- Reba McEntire is working on a new sitcom for NBC with Reba executive producers.
One after another, reboots of famous shows and movies have flooded the entertainment landscape in recent years. In 2023, for example, Frasier made a comeback after nearly two decades off the air, and news of a Harry Potter revival kept fans of the wizarding franchise on their toes. Now it's being reported that another popular sitcom is getting a reboot. Reba McEntire is said to be filming a pilot for the new iteration of her eponymous comedy show.
Debuting in 2001, Reba was one of the most popular sitcoms on the air, drawing millions of viewers to the screen. Over the course of six seasons, the show revolved around McEntire's eponymous character, whose life was in shambles after her husband suddenly left her for his pregnant dental hygienist and her teenage daughter was impregnated by her high school boyfriend. Originally aired on The WB, Reba was picked up by the network's successor, The CW, where it ended its impressive run.
Now, NBC has expressed interest in rebooting the show, but the details are a bit confusing. Here's what we know so far.
Not a Reba Reboot Exactly
Reba McEntire is reportedly working with the EPs of her original sitcom, Mindy Schultheis, Michael Hanel and Kevin Abbott, to create a new comedy show for NBC. At this point, the network has reportedly only ordered a pilot episode, which will also be executive produced by Julie Abbott.
Although only the gist of the plot has been revealed, it is obvious that the new sitcom has nothing to do with The WB/The CW's Reba. In the new show, McEntire's character will run a restaurant she inherited from her father alongside a business partner who turns out to be her half-sister. The actress behind the role has not yet been revealed. Nor has the cast.
Why Isn't It a Reba Reboot?
As with every other popular show, there have been talks of rebooting Reba since it ended in 2007. The sitcom's star herself has fueled fan interest in a potential reboot. At the same time, McEntire has admitted that bringing the show back has not been possible for a variety of reasons.
'So many obstacles. The TV business changes so much that sometimes reboots are hot and then they're not. Plus getting everyone scheduled together is also hard. Steve Howey is very busy, and so is Joanna Garcia. Mellisa [Peterman] is doing wonderful,' the country singer said a couple of years ago. 'I guess timing and schedule will dictate that in the future.'
For now, we will have to wait patiently for more details on Reba McEntire's new sitcom.
