Will Schreiber return as Wolverine's archnemesis?

Summary

  • An insider shared rumors of a comeback for an actor whose potential had been wasted
  • Fans immediately thought of Deadpool 3
  • The rumor was interpreted as a possible return of Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth

The SAG-AFTRA strike, whose goal is to force the major studios to offer better terms for actors, is in its fourth month now, and it has now been announced that the third installment of Deadpool, a spinoff/revival of the X-Men franchise now owned by Disney, is now in official production limbo. Originally slated for release in May 2024, Deadpool 3 has been postponed until November.

However, as the wait continues, the excitement grows. Besides the inclusion of the stories of the quirky immortal mercenary, the X-Men, and even Elektra from the original 2003 Daredevil into MCU Phase 5, rumors have now surfaced that an actor whose character's storyline was previously cut short may be returning to the franchise. Fans immediately thought of the talented actor and filmmaker Liev Schreiber, whose portrayal of Sabretooth was nothing short of perfection. But is it really him, and what are the chances of Liev returning to Marvel?

Fascinating Rumor

On October 26, industry insider Daniel Richtman, who frequently shares information about Marvel and DC movies, posted a tweet hinting at the potential return of an unnamed actor whose potential had been squandered.

Given that the next superhero movies in line are the new Captain America installment featuring Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Deadpool 3, fans' suspicions have naturally fallen on the latter. Two possibilities have been put forward. It could be Kelsey Grammer as Beast from X-Men: The Last Stand, whose character left the super mutant team, or Liev Schreiber, who appeared as Logan's adversary Sabretooth in the unsuccessful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and most people's money is on the latter.

Schreiber's History with Marvel

Although Tyler Mane portrayed Sabretooth in 2000's X-Men, in X-Men Origins, the role was played by Schreiber, who has a history with Hugh Jackman. Despite how Sabretooth was depicted in the prequel, there is no denying the excellent chemistry between Wolverine and his nemesis, who mirrors all of Logan's darker aspects.

Schreiber was also set to reprise his role in the critically acclaimed Logan. Both Jackman and co-screenwriter Scott Frank spoke about it. Nevertheless, his participation was declined in favor of a less successful plot arc with a Wolverine clone.

But let's not forget that Origins was also the film that first introduced us to Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool, who was not only different from his comic book counterpart but was also presented as a dark villain without a trace of the character's inherent humor (and without a mouth, to boot). With Logan set to play a major role in Deadpool 3, there's a high probability they'll finally do justice to Liev Schreiber's Sabretooth.
