Fantasy-romance hit Kings Proposal is officially leveling up to anime, with Kadokawa announcing the adaptation on Saturday. The 2021 light novel by Kōshi Tachibana and illustrator Tsunako spans eight volumes and has quickly built a devoted following.

Add another fantasy-romance to the watchlist: King's Proposal is officially getting an anime. Kadokawa dropped the news during a weekend livestream, and while they kept the details close to the vest, the setup here is gloriously wild in a way that could really pop on screen.

The quick version

King's Proposal started as a light novel series in 2021 from author Koshi Tachibana with illustrations by Tsunako. It runs 8 volumes, and English releases are handled by Yen Press. If those names ring a bell, it's because Tachibana and Tsunako also teamed up on Date A Live, which went on to rack up multiple anime seasons, movies, and even games. So yes, expectations are going to be a little high.

What actually got announced

Kadokawa announced the anime on Saturday, October 25, 2025 during the 'Fantasia Bunko Hosokyoku Aki no Dai Kanshasai' livestream. The series' official X (formerly Twitter) account also posted confirmation. That's the headline. What we don't have yet: a studio, cast, staff, or a release window. Consider this a formal green light with the fine print to come later.

The hook (and it's a good one)

At the center of King's Proposal is Saika Kuozaki, the most powerful mage alive and, inconveniently, the only person capable of stopping the world from getting wiped out. She also runs a mage academy, because of course she does.

Then things get messy. Saika and a completely normal high school kid, Mushiki Kuga, are both taken out by a mysterious enemy. To keep them alive, Saika pulls a last-second magical hail mary that leaves Mushiki... in her body. He inherits her ridiculous power level and her job, but not her experience, control, or social standing. To keep the world intact and avoid blowing his cover, Mushiki has to attend the mage academy as Saika and learn to wield power he barely understands. It's a body swap with apocalyptic stakes and a lot of room for identity chaos.

Where else to find it

Beyond the novels, there's a manga adaptation by Nemo Kurio running in Square Enix's Gangan Online. If you want a head start before the anime, that's your on-ramp.
