This is a spoiler-free take on the show.

Back in the era of network television, summer was a hiatus time. Summer saw few premieres, as these were typically scheduled for autumn. A typical TV show would air from September to May, with summer reserved for reruns.

Today the landscape is drastically different: streaming platforms, such as HBO Max, Netflix and Disney Plus, all offer on-demand content all year round. Apple TV+ is relatively new to this game, but it's already produced such hugely successful shows as Ted Lasso, Severance, and Silo.

And now Apple TV+ has launched a brand-new miniseries, Hijack. It follows Sam, portrayed by Idris Elba, a professional business negotiator whose flight gets hijacked. Sam finds himself having to negotiate a safe exit for the passengers and crew. If you're thinking of watching it, here are some initial viewer impressions.

Cons:

Dragged Out

Many viewers note that Hijack is rather slow-paced. Each episode corresponds to an hour of the flight, and generally, not a lot happens in that timeframe. Even though the premise sounds like it should be a thriller, there is surprisingly little action, with some viewers finding the show plain boring at times.

Unoriginal

The show hardly breaks new ground with either the story or presentation. Many have compared it to the classic action series 24 because Hijack also takes place in 'real time'. The biggest difference is that Apple TV+'s series has a less diverse plot.

Despite these criticisms, Hijack has been generally well-received, with people saying that, on balance, the show's quite enjoyable.

Pros:

Nostalgic in a Good Way

While some may find Hijack unoriginal, others view it as a nostalgic nod to classic TV shows.

'I like it. It reminds me of those old high suspense tv shows in which you're really not supposed to think too much about whether or not it makes sense,' a Redditor wrote.

Bingeable

Hijack's slow pace makes it highly binge-able: so little happens in each episode that you want to keep watching to see some action. Just be advised that the final episode hasn't been released, so if you plan on bingeing on Hijack, you might want to wait until the whole series is available for streaming.

The fourth and final episode will be released on Apple TV+ on 12 July.

Our verdict is you should give Hijack a try: it just might be your cup of tea.
