Is Big Little Lies Season 3 Finally Happening? Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon Spill the Beans
The actresses tease the continuation of the fan-favorite comedy-drama.
Summary
- Season 3 of Big Little Lies has been a hot topic since last November thanks to Nicole Kidman.
- Kidman and Reese Witherspoon recently sat down to discuss the future of the HBO show.
- Originally, Big Little Lies wasn't supposed to last past one season.
Nearly seven months ago, a juicy piece of news slipped Nicole Kidman's tongue and sent fans of HBO's hit black comedy drama Big Little Lies over the moon. The show's star and one of its executive producers accidentally revealed that Season 3 of the fan-favorite series was in the works. No official confirmation followed, however, and the buzz around the news, which began to seem more like gossip, gradually died down.
Recently, Nicole Kidman sat down with another Big Little Lies star and EP, Reese Witherspoon, for a conversation for Vanity Fair. The actresses discussed their longtime friendship, their careers and, of course, Big Little Lies. And while there hasn't been an official announcement from HBO, Kidman and Witherspoon gave an update on Season 3 of the hit black comedy drama.
Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon Confirm That Season 3 Is Underway
The actresses' conversation segued rather abruptly into Big Little Lies, with Reese Witherspoon recalling that her phone was ringing all day with calls from co-stars Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz and Shailene Woodley after Nicole Kidman accidentally revealed in November 2023 that the show's third season was happening.
'But we are now! We're moving fast and furious [with Season 3 of Big Little Lies],' Kidman commented on the current state of affairs with BLL. 'We're in good shape. The rest is – we need to shut up, because there's this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you've done it.'
Reese Witherspoon chimed in, saying that she has a special rule when it comes to things like this. 'It's called, "Don't be full of shit,"' she said with a laugh, adding that unless you're standing on a set in a costume, there's no way to tell if a project is really happening, so it's unwise to discuss it.
The Fascinating Journey of Big Little Lies
Based on Liane Moriarty's novel of the same name, Big Little Lies debuted on HBO in early 2017. David E. Kelly's television adaptation was intended to be a seven-episode miniseries, but it proved so popular with viewers – Season 1 has an average IMDb score of 8.4 – that it was renewed for a second season at the end of the year.
Interestingly, Jean-Marc Vallée, who directed the first season of Big Little Lies, was initially against the show continuing. But when the comedy-drama won several Emmys, he expressed his desire to reunite the team. And that's how Season 2 of BLL was born, which premiered in mid-2019, though Vallée didn't direct this time around.
As for Season 3, it has yet to be confirmed by HBO.
