A fresh Avengers: Doomsday rumor teases Patrick Stewart’s swan song as Professor Charles Xavier, with The Kristian Harloff Show on X hinting the Marvel legend could make his final appearance in the role.

File this under rumors I wish were not true: there is new chatter that Patrick Stewart might be hanging up the wheelchair for good, with Avengers: Doomsday not just being his last ride as Professor X, but his last acting role, period.

What people are claiming

The Kristian Harloff Show floated the idea on X, and an MCU Film News post on November 4, 2025 amplified it: Stewart will reportedly appear as Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday, and that appearance would double as his final job in front of a camera.

Is any of this actually confirmed?

Short answer: no. Stewart has not confirmed it, and Marvel has not either. Some of the online chatter frames his Doomsday appearance like it is a done deal, but without an official statement, this stays firmly in rumor territory. Treat it like speculation until we hear otherwise.

How we got here

  • Logan (2017) was supposed to be the goodbye. Stewart publicly said he was done playing Professor X after that film, which gave the character a proper exit.
  • Then he popped back in for a cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). So much for being done.
  • Now, the buzz is that he will show up again in Avengers: Doomsday, with some reports stretching that into: this will be his final acting role, not just his final X-Men stint.
  • It fits a broader MCU moment Kevin Feige has hinted at before: a soft reset and a handoff to the next generation.
  • Release date note: Avengers: Doomsday is slated for December 18, 2026 in the U.S.

Would Stewart really retire?

He is 83, he has done decades of stage and screen, and he has nothing left to prove. But he has also been pretty clear about how he feels about stepping away. Back in 2012, he told The Standard:

"So long as the body and the mind are capable, I shall be going off to rehearsals. Stopping is unthinkable. What would I do? This is my life."

That does not sound like a guy itching to quit. If anything, it suggests a more nuanced possibility: maybe he slows down on movies, but keeps doing stage work. There are already plenty of whispers that even if he bows out of Hollywood projects, he would likely keep showing up in live theater as long as he is physically and mentally up for it.

My read

This could go either way. Stewart said farewell with Logan, then came back for Multiverse of Madness, so he obviously has a soft spot for Xavier. If Avengers: Doomsday is the sendoff, it would be a tidy bookend at a time when Marvel is retooling its lineup. But until Stewart himself says, 'This is it,' calling it his final role is just a guess.

Personally, I hope he is not done with movies yet. And if he is, I hope we still get to see him on stage being his Shakespearean self for as long as he wants.
