He conquered Thor, Dune, and Good Will Hunting—now 74-year-old Stellan Skarsgård is watching a new Skarsgård takeover, as several of his eight children quietly step into Hollywood’s spotlight.

If you feel like a Skarsgård pops up in every other show or movie, you are not hallucinating. Stellan Skarsgård — yes, the guy from Thor, Dune, and Good Will Hunting — is not only a legend in his own right, he is also the dad of eight. A bunch of them act. Some work behind the camera. One literally saves lives for a living. It is a dynasty, but weirdly low-key about it.

The family vibe: big, talented, and apparently grounded. You will see them cheering each other on at premieres, and they are spread across acting, modeling, casting, production, and (curveball) medicine. Here is the family lineup, oldest to youngest, with where you have seen them and where they are headed.

  1. Alexander Skarsgård (born Aug 25, 1976)

The eldest started early, showing up at age 7 alongside his dad in the 1984 film Åke och hans värld, then in the Swedish hit The Dog That Smiled. Fame freaked him out, so at 19 he bailed on acting and did 18 months in the Swedish Armed Forces. A visit to LA to see his dad pulled him back in — one audition later, he landed his first Hollywood gig in Zoolander (2001).

The real heat came with HBO: Generation Kill (2008) and then seven seasons as Eric Northman on True Blood. He collected serious hardware for Big Little Lies in 2017, and has kept bouncing between prestige TV and genre hits: The Stand, Succession, The Northman, and the Murderbot TV series. In March 2023, he confirmed he welcomed his first child with partner Tuva Novotny.

  2. Gustaf Skarsgård (born Nov 12, 1980)

Gustaf was the first sibling who locked in on acting as a kid. Instead of teen soaps, he went the formal-training route at the Swedish National Academy of Mime and Acting and worked with the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. Film arrived with a bang in 2003 via the Swedish hit Evil, and international attention followed with The Way Back (2010).

Irony alert: after avoiding soaps, TV is where he truly popped — seven years as Floki on Vikings (2013–2020), a turn in Westworld season 2, and Netflix’s Cursed (2020). He shared in November 2021 that he had taken on a new role: fatherhood.

  3. Sam Skarsgård (born Jun 5, 1982)

Sam took a completely different lane. He followed their mom My into medicine and works in an ICU, which is why you do not see him on red carpets much. He did dabble on screen early with projects like The Invisible, Skuggvärld, and Jim & Piraterna Blom, but the hospital is where he makes the impact.

"He, on a daily basis, saves lives."

That is Alexander talking about Sam — and honestly, hard to top that credit.

  4. Bill Skarsgård (born Aug 9, 1990)

Bill flirted with other interests (he leaned into science in high school) before deciding acting was the move — and he was intent on standing on his own, famous last name or not. After early momentum in Sweden, he broke through in the U.S. with Netflix’s Hemlock Grove (2013), then stacked roles in Allegiant, Deadpool 2, and Hulu’s Castle Rock.

Global fame hit when he became nightmare fuel as Pennywise in It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019). He kept the villain energy going in John Wick: Chapter 4, took the lead in The Crow reboot, and showed up in Nosferatu, Locked, and Boy Kills World. He has also stepped back into the clown shoes for the TV prequel It: Welcome to Derry. Off-screen, he has been with Swedish actor Alida Morberg since 2016; they welcomed a daughter in October 2018 and a second child in 2023.

  5. Eija Skarsgård (born Feb 27, 1992)

The lone sister in the crew, and she likes it that way. Eija did not chase acting. She modeled for a stretch, then moved behind the camera, working as a casting director on projects including Stenbeck, The Dance Club, and Deliver Me. She met her future husband, Zeke Tastas, at a nightclub in December 2011; they married on August 24, 2019.

  6. Valter Skarsgård (born Oct 25, 1995)

The youngest of Stellan and My’s kids went the acting route too, mostly in Swedish film and TV, with some international shine. He appeared in the thriller series Black Lake (2016–2018), then in Netflix’s eerie Icelandic sci-fi Katla (2021). A big recent highlight: leading Börje – The Journey of a Legend, a six-episode drama about hockey icon Börje Salming.

Online, he is got a mischievous streak — a viral joke about his place in the family earned him the nickname 'Twitter king.' He also seems especially tight with sister Eija if his Instagram is any indication.

  7. Ossian Skarsgård (born 2009)

Stellan’s seventh child and his first with wife Megan Everett. Despite being one of the younger kids, he is already acting: he appeared with big brother Bill in the 2022 Swedish film Bränn Alla Mina Brev ('Burn All My Letters'). He has also popped up in The Wife and Trolltider – legenden om Bergatrollet.

He has done the family-support thing on carpets too — spotted at Stockholm premieres for It Chapter Two (2019) and Netflix’s Clark (2022), both tied to Bill.

  8. Kolbjörn Skarsgård (born 2012)

The youngest of the bunch, also with Megan Everett, and already acting. His first role came in Netflix’s Clark (2022) with Bill, and he played Mio in the Swedish series Kenny Starfighter (a proud-mom Instagram special). At 13, he is already keeping the family brand alive on screen.

Quick big-picture refresher: Stellan is 74, the clan spans two marriages (the first six with My Skarsgård, the last two with Megan Everett), and across the eight kids you will find leading men, scene-stealing villains, a casting director, and a doctor. They work in front of and behind the camera — and sometimes far away from it — but they tend to show up for one another. If you have watched TV or gone to the movies in the last decade, you have probably watched a Skarsgård without even realizing it.
