Hunter x Hunter, once a titan of anime and manga, is slipping from fans’ grasp. With Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga locked in a lengthy hiatus that stalled the source material, the anime ground to a halt, leaving the franchise in limbo.

Hunter x Hunter is one of those all-timer series that can still knock you flat years after you watched it. The problem is, it has also been mostly unavailable in any new form for ages. The manga kept slipping into hiatus, the anime paused after its last arc in 2014, and somewhere along the way the momentum started to feel like it was evaporating. Fans are still holding out for season 7 and the next big saga in the manga. Fair. But whether any of that actually happens comes down to two things: Yoshihiro Togashi being healthy enough to finish it, and the publishers choosing a return that protects the legacy instead of rushing it.

Where the anime left off

The 2011 Madhouse run wrapped with season 6 back in 2014, ending on the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc. That covers episodes 137 through 148. Since then: radio silence. There has been no official greenlight, no teaser, nothing for season 7.

What season 7 would adapt (and why it is not happening yet)

If and when the anime comes back, the next chapter in line is the Succession Contest arc. That storyline is still unfolding in the manga, which means the anime does not have enough material to work with. Realistically, the show is not returning until the manga clears a big chunk of that arc. Even if the manga resumes publication by the end of the year, there still would not be enough content for Madhouse (or whoever takes it on) to build a full season around it. Harsh truth: do not expect a Succession Contest season before 2030.

The Togashi factor

Togashi was last deep in the Succession Contest arc before health issues forced him to step back. He has started working again, but the pipeline from his desk to printed chapters takes time. Even once he has finished pages, the publishers still have to decide when and how to reintroduce the series. So yes, optimism is fine. But the timeline is going to be measured in years, not months.

Dark Continent: the bigger picture

The Succession Contest arc keeps pointing toward the Dark Continent and why it matters to the world of Hunter x Hunter. After Succession wraps, the next destination is pretty clearly the Dark Continent arc, which has all the ingredients to be a massive, maybe even ultimate, storyline for the series. Togashi reportedly knows how he wants this to end; the challenge is actually walking the story to that finish line.

Recent manga chapter dates

If you are tracking the manga itself, here is how the most recent batch landed:

  • Chapter 401 - October 6, 2024
  • Chapter 402 - October 13, 2024
  • Chapter 403 - October 20, 2024
  • Chapter 404 - October 27, 2024
  • Chapter 405 - November 3, 2024
  • Chapter 406 - November 10, 2024
  • Chapter 407 - November 17, 2024
  • Chapter 408 - November 24, 2024
  • Chapter 409 - December 1, 2024
  • Chapter 410 - December 8, 2024

So, will we ever get season 7?

Short answer: probably, but not soon. It all hinges on Togashi finishing the Succession Contest arc and the publishers giving the manga a stable runway again. If that happens, the anime follows. Until then, the best bet is to be patient and rewatch the Madhouse run, which still absolutely sings.
