Hugh Jackman’s New Award Has Ryan Reynolds Seeing Green
Hugh Jackman kept his playful feud with Ryan Reynolds alive at the 2025 Gotham Awards, snagging a new honor and teasing it’s one that will leave Reynolds seriously jealous.
Hugh Jackman picked up a new trophy and, naturally, used the moment to poke Ryan Reynolds. Some things are just constants in life.
The setup
At the 2025 Gotham Awards, Jackman was honored with the inaugural Gotham Musical Tribute for his upcoming movie 'Song Sung Blue.' He shared the recognition with his co-star Kate Hudson. Before he got into the thank-yous, he pulled his 'Deadpool & Wolverine' partner-in-crime into the room.
"Hey, everyone. Thank you. Thank you so much. This is so cool, and something to make Ryan Reynolds insanely jealous. I love it."
Short, petty, perfect.
Why this bit never gets old
The Jackman/Reynolds friendly rivalry goes back to 2009 on the set of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine.' Jackman was tight with Scarlett Johansson, and Reynolds had just married her. So Jackman did what any self-appointed big brother would do: he gave Reynolds a hard time about being on his best behavior. That light teasing turned into an ongoing roast that escalated once 'Deadpool' took off and Reynolds started prodding him on social media to, well, do whatever he wanted. The two have spent years clowning each other in interviews and online, and it still plays because both guys know exactly where the line is.
Where they are now (besides everywhere)
They called a truce in 2019 and announced they would shoot ads for each other’s companies — which they actually did. And because their bromance is apparently a business strategy now, they also co-own an Australian SailGP team, the Bonds Flying Roos. They revealed that joint venture in a video last month.
Quick catch-up on the feud-that-isn’t
- 2009: It starts on 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' when Jackman razzes Reynolds over his then-new marriage to Scarlett Johansson.
- The social era: The back-and-forth escalates thanks to 'Deadpool' and some expert nudging on social media.
- 2019: Official truce; they agree to make ads for each other’s companies.
- Last month: They team up as co-owners of SailGP’s Australian squad, the Bonds Flying Roos.
- 2025 Gotham Awards: Jackman collects the Gotham Musical Tribute (shared with Kate Hudson for 'Song Sung Blue') and squeezes in a fresh jab to make Reynolds 'insanely jealous.'
So yes, Jackman got a shiny new honor. But the real tradition he kept alive was the ongoing, extremely public, extremely amusing one-upmanship with Reynolds. Long may it continue.
