How Much Money Original Stars Earned From Each Harry Potter Movie
Tons of it, unsurprisingly.
The Harry Potter movie series was a huge hit, with the combined box office total for eight movies reaching $7.7 billion (on the total budget of $1.2 billion). In terms of sheer revenue, this makes Harry Potter one of the most successful movie franchises of all time. So, it is no surprise that all the actors who played major roles in it got really rich.
But how much exactly did they earn, and how did their salaries change with each movie? Let's have a look at some hard numbers — take a deep breath as these paychecks are just mind-blowing!
Of course, you won't be surprised to learn that the actor who portrayed the titular character out-earned the rest of the cast by a mile. Daniel Radcliffe's total earnings for all eight movies are believed to approach $110 million. For playing his role in the first film of the franchise, the actor got about $1 million, and his paychecks grew rapidly thereafter, as he made almost $3 million for the second movie, just above $6 million for the third one, about $11 million for the fourth installment, and almost $14 for the fifth one.
Then, Radcliffe's salary skyrocketed even higher, as he received around $23.7 million for the sixth Harry Potter movie and close to $50 million for the finale. Wow!
All the other stars' salaries underwent a similar trajectory, as the franchise's popularity grew exponentially — except with much smaller numbers.
Emma Watson got 'only' about $70 million for playing Hermione — less than $1 million for the first movie and about $30 million for the final two installments. Likewise, Rupert Grint reportedly brought home the same amount of money for portraying Harry's best friend Ron in all eight parts of the magical saga.
Interestingly, Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy was seen on screen for only a little more than half an hour throughout all eight movies — but the actor still earned close to $17.5 million for that role! This is a lot more than the vast majority of actors from the film series made from the project, and many of them haven't earned that much throughout their entire careers in film and TV.
It's obvious that the Harry Potter film franchise was a huge commercial juggernaut, and the information on how much the cast members earned from their roles is all the more relevant now that a new TV adaptation has been announced by HBO.
Clearly, it's going to be hard for the new series to outdo the hit movies in terms of earnings and popularity with fans, but we still hope that the salaries of the show's yet-to-be-announced cast will be comparable to those of the old Harry Potter stars.
