Without family, you've got nothing, especially when it's almost the only word in every script.

Summary

  • Family is one of the central themes in the Fast & Furious franchise
  • But it has long since become a meme because of how often it gets mentioned
  • With each movie, the word is used more and more
  • Curiously, in the latest installment, it's not Dom he uses it the most

The fastest movie franchise, full of the smell of burnt tires and the roar of NOS-pumped engines, Fast & Furious has long since morphed into a chaotic melodrama of deaths, resurrections, and long-lost family ties ruling supreme in high-octane action scenes.

These days, this kind of rambling is more reminiscent of Riverdale than a big-budget action movie franchise, but that does not change the fact that we keep flocking to theaters every time a new Fast & Furious installment gets released.

It probably appeals to us on a subconscious level as a parable about family bonds that are forged not in blood but in shared experiences, loyalty, and mutual help. Of course, Dom Toretto's talk of 'family' has now become a full-blown meme. It's the stuff of drinking games now, so we've decided to tally up how many times the word is used in every movie.

How Many Times Was The Word Used In Each Movie?

11. The Fast and Furious (2001) – 2 times

10. 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) – 0 times (can you imagine that?)

9. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) – 6 times

8. Fast & Furious (2009) – 2 times

7. Fast Five (2011) – 5 times

6. Fast & Furious 6 (2013) – 11 times

5. Furious 7 (2015) – 9 times

4. The Fate of the Furious (2017) – 16 times

3. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) – 15 times

2. F9 (2021) – 7 times

1. Fast X (2023) – 27 times

Even though family is one of the central themes of the film series, the word itself is hardly ever mentioned in the early installments. Surprisingly, the second film, arguably the most popular entry in the franchise to date, does not mention it even once. As time went by, though, the writers started laying on thick, inadvertently turning the whole thing into a meme in the process.

In total, across all the movies released so far, the word is used a whopping 100 times! It's as if the writers were deliberately trying to achieve this milestone in Fast X.

Dom Isn't The One Who Said 'Family' The Most

The latest movie, Fast X, uses the word an insane 27 times, so writing the lines for the characters must have been lots of fun. What's surprising is that it's not Dominic Toretto, the character who seems most preoccupied with family issues, who uses it the most, but rather his nemesis, Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa). Dom only mentions 'family' three times, while Dante uses the word nine times.
