We're in for at least two more seasons.

Heartstopper is one of the most popular shows on Netflix, dedicating ample time to addressing issues faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and offering a tender story of teenage love. All credit goes to Alice Oseman, who wrote the show based on their own young adult comics of the same name.

Season 2 concluded in August on a huge cliffhanger in the form of Charlie and Nick's ultimate declaration of love for each other. Now, Season 3 is in the works. However, the graphic novel series is still ongoing, with at least two more volumes in the pipeline. So, how many seasons should Netflix release to adapt all of it?

Confirmed Number of Seasons

About a month after the overwhelming success of Heartstopper's first season, Netflix UK announced in May 2022 that two more seasons were on the way. It's unusual for Netflix to announce seasons in advance as it normally tends to pull the plug on shows as soon as their viewership dips.

However, Heartstopper's ratings have been high and have only increased during Season 2. So, we can be confident that we'll get at least one more season.

Oseman's Own Estimation

This decision ultimately lies with Netflix, but we can't overlook the influence of Oseman, the show's creator, co-executive producer, and writer.

'It would probably be four seasons to cover the full story,' they said. 'I haven't done any in-detail planning or anything, but it's quite easy to divide up the books into seasons, so four, I think, would do it.'

Will It Manage To Cover All The Graphic Novels?

That raises a valid question: will four seasons be enough? The graphic novel currently consists of four volumes, with the fifth set to be released on December 7, 2023. Furthermore, a sixth volume was announced this past spring as the final one.

Season 1 of the adaptation covered the main storylines of the first two volumes, while the second season focused on Volume 3, incorporating plot elements from Volume 4. Therefore, the upcoming Season 3 will be based on the events of Volumes 4 and possibly 5, while the yet-to-be-announced Season 4 would then draw from the fifth and sixth volumes.

This number of episodes may be enough to cover the entire story, but the finale may seem somewhat rushed due to the number of storylines. In that case, it will all depend on the ratings — if Netflix deems the show valuable, we might very well go ahead with a fifth season. But who knows, perhaps the story will conclude with a movie similar to Teen Wolf?
