The Season 3 finale was a tearjerker not only for the audience but for the cast as well.

Based on the series of novels of the same name by Alf Wight, All Creatures Great and Small follows the delightful and sweet story of 20th-century veterinary surgeons in the quiet British countryside of the Yorkshire Dales.

However, in addition to their personal dramas and the daily responsibilities of treating animals, the series' characters are now facing the dark times, as Britain enters World War II in 1939.

The Season 3 finale, titled 'Merry Bloody Christmas,' left us with a heartbreaking cliffhanger. On September 3, 1939, the Skeldale House veterinarians learn that their life is about to change drastically, as the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announces over the radio that the UK is entering the war against Nazi Germany.

One of the show's protagonists, Tristan Farnon, volunteers to join the British army, and his goodbye speech in the last episode was incredibly touching for the other characters, viewers, and cast alike. Callum Woodhouse, the actor who plays Tristan, talked about his emotions during the goodbye scene:

'It is just such a beautiful end, an absolute hurricane of emotions. That's why he's crying and smiling, he's upset to be leaving his brother, but he's finally got the acceptance that he's been craving,' the actor said.

Tristan's brother, Siegfried, has always been a stoic man, never showing his feelings much, but the news of his younger brother going off to war, and especially his heartfelt farewell speech, made him very emotional.

Barely holding back their tears, the brothers share an embrace, as the older understands that he wouldn't be able to stop Tristan — and besides, volunteering to go to war is just the right thing for him to do at the time.

'He's also figured out what he thinks is the right next step for him, which is, again, a positive thing,' Woodhouse continued, explaining the motives behind his character's action.

Tristan has always been the source of conflict and comedy in the show, so his decision to join the Royal Army Veterinary Corps is a defining act for him, perfectly representing his character development.

Of course, this season's cliffhanger has left many fans worrying. Will Tristan return in the upcoming Season 4? Are we going to see him on the front, or will we learn about his fate through his letters? We know that, in the original book, the character survived the war, but there is no guarantee that the series will stick to the source material in this respect.

The production of All Creatures Great and Small Season 4 has already begun, and we should expect the new season to be released in the fall of 2023 at the earliest.
