HBO locks in the release month for House of the Dragon Season 3 as the teaser trailer debut looms.

Westeros is heating back up. After a full 2025 without new episodes, House of the Dragon is finally charging back this summer.

Season 3 lands in June

The show’s official account on X rolled out a new poster and, more importantly, the plan: Season 3 arrives on HBO in June. No exact day yet, but the window lines up with the second season’s June 2024 debut, which means we’re looking at a clean two-year gap between Seasons 2 and 3. For context, Season 2 wrapped in August 2024, so yes, it’s been a minute.

HBO’s timing is very HBO

The network is riding momentum from its other prequel. The Season 1 finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs this Sunday, after a first season that’s been very well received. Smart move: use that warm glow to stoke the dragon fire. Alongside the poster, HBO is also dropping a House of the Dragon Season 3 teaser tomorrow, February 19, with the rollout already teased on X.

The poster: all eyes on Rhaenyra

This new image puts Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) front and center, crowned and framed by the serrated blades of the Iron Throne. Last we saw, Rhaenyra and her half-brother, King Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), were mid-civil war over that very chair. If you’ve read George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, you have a pretty good idea where the next moves are headed. If not, buckle in.

About that sophomore slump

Season 1 drew raves; Season 2 hit choppier air. Two big reasons kept coming up from fans (and even Martin): the show veered further from the book, and HBO trimmed the episode count from 10 down to 8. That shorter order meant Season 2 stopped earlier in the story than originally planned. Season 3 has a chance to course-correct and push the conflict into the blood-and-fire stretch everyone’s been waiting for.

The long game in Westeros

House of the Dragon is set to wrap with Season 4. Given how complex this series is to produce, expect that final run in 2028. Meanwhile, HBO is already lining up more A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for 2027. That show’s lighter scale makes it easier to turn around, which means we’re looking at a reliable, once-a-year trip back to Westeros for the next few years.
