House of the Dragon Season 3 Confirms Ser Luthor’s Death — Here’s Who Killed Him
The latest hour of House of the Dragon doesn’t just target the Gold Cloaks — it cuts down their commander.
In a brutal turn inside Season 3, Episode 5, Ser Luthor Largent is found murdered alongside several of his men, their bodies strung up in King’s Landing for all to see, Daemon Targaryen included.

Before his death, Largent had been a steadfast ally of Queen Rhaenyra, using the City Watch to help secure the capital in her name. His exit also marks the end of Tom Cullen’s run on the series.
The episode traces a wave of killings aimed at the Gold Cloaks after Rhaenyra orders them to hunt down those spreading mocking messages about her. The Watch responds with crackdowns, but the retaliation escalates fast — to the point that even moving in squads isn’t enough to keep them safe.
Daemon takes up the hunt for whoever’s behind the attacks. What looks at first like a lone assassin starts to resemble a coordinated effort, and a clue on a captured suspect — a gold coin tied to Ormund Hightower and Daeron Targaryen — points suspicion toward the Hightower side of the war without naming a mastermind on-screen.
How it differs from the book
In Fire & Blood, Luthor Largent also dies — but much later. George R.R. Martin’s history places his death during the King’s Landing riots, when the city turns on Rhaenyra. By moving the killing up to midseason, the show strips Rhaenyra and Daemon of a key enforcer earlier than readers expected and shifts the balance of power inside the capital.
As of Episode 5, the series hasn’t revealed who ordered Largent’s murder or who, exactly, carried it out.
