Hot Take: The Idol Should Have Had At Least 2 More Seasons

The controversial show ended too soon.

Needless to say, HBO's The Idol was one of the biggest disappointments of the year. While viewers were expecting an intricate and compelling piece of television created by The Weeknd and Sam Levinson, they actually got a trite, needlessly complicated and just downright bad, exploitative show that made some fans really question the sanity of the co-creators. However, some disagree with this statement and blame HBO for canceling the project way too early.

And actually, it's not that hard to agree with those who want The Idol back, as there was definitely a hate campaign during the show's initial run, with thousands of people accusing The Weeknd of predatory behavior and Levinson of poor writing and character development.

A hard thing to love

It's obvious that Levinson and The Weeknd tried to make their show as provocative as possible, adding excessive amounts of violence and nudity just to piss some viewers off. However, it seems that they went a bit overboard, and even people who are usually not against taking part in controversial projects began to shame The Idol.

But hate wave aside, The Idol was definitely an interesting show - the dynamic between The Weeknd's Tedros and Lily Rose Depp's Jocelyn was riveting to watch, and the final twist promised some interesting things in the upcoming season.

Lack of Faith

It's understandable why HBO decided to cancel The Idol so quickly, as the public reaction was so negative that being associated with the show would have been a definite bad PR move for the network. However, Levinson and The Weeknd certainly had a lot of gas in their tanks after the end of Season 1, and they could have really fixed a lot of mistakes in the possible future installments.

And that's why The Idol's cancellation is really sad, because the creators certainly had a lot of ideas for the story, and Jocelyn and Tedros' storyline could have easily given the fans one or even two more seasons. A huge missed opportunity!
