A newly surfaced Sony court filing in its Tencent lawsuit, flagged by The Game Post, quietly pins down when the long-awaited Horizon Zero Dawn movie will start shooting—finally giving fans a real timeline after this year’s announcement.

Horizon Zero Dawn is inching toward the big screen, and we just learned it in the least glamorous way possible: a court filing. Not kidding.

Sony quietly laid out where the movie stands while suing Tencent over a game called Light of Motiram, which Sony alleges is basically a Horizon clone. Buried in the legal paperwork, PlayStation Productions boss Asad Qizilbash spelled out the plan for Aloy’s live-action debut — and it’s further along than Sony had said when they announced the project earlier this year.

What the filing actually says

We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures. We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027. The live-action film follows the recent collaborations between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions on the 2022 film Uncharted and the 2023 film Gran Turismo.

  • Script: Done (Qizilbash calls it a working script)
  • Director: They’re actively looking
  • Timeline: Targeting a 2026 shoot, aiming to release in 2027
  • Partners: PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures
  • Track record: Same pairing that made Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023)

What we still don’t know

Pretty much everything you’d want to know beyond that. No cast. No creative team announced. No word on how much of Horizon Zero Dawn (and its sequel) they’ll try to cram into a first movie. This filing is the first real timetable we’ve seen, but it’s light on the fun stuff.

Why this surfaced now

The update popped up in Sony’s ongoing lawsuit against Tencent over Light of Motiram, which Sony claims lifts heavily from Horizon Zero Dawn. Not exactly the usual place to get a production calendar, but here we are.

Bottom line: if the 2026 shoot holds, 2027 is the year Aloy hits theaters. Now we wait to see who’s holding the bow.
