Blackpink's Jennie is more than just a music icon to her fans; she's now making waves as an acting sensation.

Recently, Jennie, credited as Jennie Ruby Jane, made her acting debut in Sam Levinson's controversial series, The Idol, which has seen two episodes come out on HBO. Casting the K-pop sensation appears to be a masterstroke by Levinson. Even as the series faces significant criticism from critics and viewers, Jennie's performance stands out as a beacon of hope. Or at least, that's the consensus among Blackpink's devoted fanbase.

‘Real life of movie, Jennie Kim is the MAIN EVENT,’ a fan wrote on Twitter.

The Idol focuses on pop star Jocelyn (played by Lily-Rose Depp) and the obstacles the music industry puts on her path to stardom. An early scene finds Jocelyn struggling with a provocative dance routine for her new music video. Jennie's character, Dyanne, Jocelyn's backup dancer and friend, steps in to demonstrate the correct moves.

That was Jennie's inaugural acting scene and a poignant moment for her extensive fanbase. A clip of the scene uploaded to YouTube has far outpaced the series itself in views, boasting a whopping 5.7 million and counting. Social media platforms were inundated with hashtags like #JennieOnTheIdolPremiere, #JENNIEActressDebut, and #JENNIE. Despite her relatively minor role and limited dialogue, fans are heaping praise on her life-life performance.

‘Damn I salute her truly! Not being biased... she is SO NATURAL! I've seen hundreds of movies, hundreds of TV series and I swear... I doubt this is her first acting gig! Mother is a pro!’ a deeply impressed fan commented on Jennie's performance, echoing the sentiment of Blackpink’s fandom.

Although The Idol, including Jennie's part, has been criticised for its over-sexualisation of female characters, most agree that it doesn't detract from the Blackpink star's acting prowess.

‘She needs an Emmy for this one,’ an enthusiastic fan commented on the choreography scene.

Moreover, fans believe that, despite the controversy surrounding The Idol, Jennie's involvement will undoubtedly broaden her exposure. It's likely to open up new opportunities for the budding actress in Hollywood, a prospect she's hinted at previously.

‘She’s actually a good actress, it’s a shame that her acting debut is wasted on this. Hopefully, Jennie gets better projects in the future,’ a fan commented under the hit YouTube video, garnering lots of likes.

The Idol Episode 3 will air on HBO on Sunday, 18 June 2023.
