Few reality TV series get the dubious honor of having one of their stars convicted of a serious crime while they're still appearing on the show, but The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City can 'boast' just that.

When Season 2 of the 10th series in The Real Housewives franchise was in the production stage, one of its stars got arrested for wire fraud and money laundering.

As it turned out, Jen Shah was involved in a massive telemarketing fraud scheme that targeted the elderly and the vulnerable all across the US. In 2022, Shah pleaded guilty, and earlier this year, she began serving her 6.5-year sentence.

Surprisingly, this didn't prevent the star from appearing in the second and third installments of RHOSLC. In a way, the legal scandal boosted Jen Shah's popularity, and there was even a documentary about her scam released.

But otherwise, Shah is in an unenviable position, and she also doesn't seem to have the money to pay her lawyer, which further aggravates the situation.

Before she was charged with the telemarketing fraud, Jen Shah had a net worth of several million dollars, but according to Internet rumors, most of this money has been seized to help recompense her victims.

What is known for sure is that Shah's attorney, Priya Chaudhry, claims that her client owes her $124,422.95 in legal fees and other expenses.

According to Chaudhry, who now requested from the court to allow her to drop Shah as a client, the star and her husband breached their contract by promising to pay their fees and not doing so, repeatedly.

However, the lawyer did not clarify why her firm had continued to provide their services to the fraudster, despite her failure to pay.

Shah is now serving her time in the prison in Bryan, Texas, so her career on RHOSLC appears to be over. Reportedly, she and her inmates created a play together, named The Real Housewives of Bryan, but it's unlikely that this piece of writing will be ever adapted for national TV.

In the meantime, Season 4 of RHOSLC was recently announced to be in development, and the show may even benefit from all the attention generated by Shah's scandalous case.
