Bilbo in RoP? Now that's what we call the ultimate fan service.

Martin Freeman, known for his roles in The Hobbit trilogy, Black Panther, and Sherlock, has revealed his thoughts on possibly reprising his role as Bilbo Baggins at some point in Amazon's own Tolkien series, The Rings of Power.

The 50-year-old actor hinted that he could be tempted to return as his Hobbit character, but only under the right circumstances.

With the continuing season of RoP likely arriving next year, in a previous interview with Metro, Freeman shared his initial thoughts on the show and whether he would consider reprising his role. He expressed his optimism for the series, acknowledging that the stories created by JRR Tolkien will continue to be told for centuries to come.

However, while Freeman indicated his willingness to return as Bilbo Baggins, he also emphasized that it would depend on who was behind the project and the reason for his appearance. Raising concerns that it might appear odd to the viewers if his appearance didn't make sense for the story.

He said, 'If it didn't look conspicuous and if it wasn't jarring, then maybe so, but anything that pulled the viewer out and go, 'Well, that's a different version,' that might be a bit weird'.

Despite his willingness to return, it's unlikely that Freeman will make an appearance in the RoP series. The story is set centuries before Bilbo was born, and hobbits weren't a significant part of Middle-Earth during the Second Age.

Even though it seems unlikely, a flash-forward is not impossible. Bilbo's character is an avid storyteller and budding historian. Some form of cameo which shows Bilbo telling part of the story could work as some form of cameo, which ties the new series and the previous film franchises together.

Of course, not all fans would be best pleased to see Freeman, or any version of Bilbo, appear in the series. Such a cameo would likely accomplish little story-wise and come off as fan service.

Many fans also believe that the franchise deserves better than gratuitous pandering, and it's clear that Freeman holds similar views, as he is so committed to preserving the integrity of the story at all costs.

Fans of the LotR franchise will have to wait and see what the following RoP season has in store. While it's unlikely that Freeman will make an appearance, fans can rest assured that the actor is committed to the franchise's legacy and will only return to the story if it makes sense for the plot and setting.
