Dr. Meredith Grey is gone, but the show must go on.

As Grey's Anatomy Season 19 approaches its finale on 19 May, fans of the ABC medical drama can rest assured knowing the show has been renewed for at least one more season. Here's what we know so far about Grey's Anatomy Season 20.

Who will be the showrunner for Season 20?

ABC's official announcement of the medical drama's renewal came in March 2023, accompanied by news of a significant crew change: starting in Season 20, post-Shonda Rhimes showrunner Krista Vernoff will be replaced by executive producer Meg Marinis, who has been with the project since Season 3.

When will Season 20 premiere?

The exact release date has not been announced yet, but if past seasons are any indication, the new one will most likely debut in the fall of 2023, probably in September, following the pattern of most of the seasons so far.

Will Season 20 feature Ellen Pompeo?

This season is special because the star of the medical drama has announced her official departure from the show. Her farewell episode coincided with the midseason premiere, but Pompeo will also appear in the season finale. Will it be her final appearance? Probably not. The actress remains an executive producer and will continue to provide the voice-overs that have become Grey's signature over the years. She may also make occasional guest appearances. So, it is highly likely that fans will get to see Dr. Meredith Grey in Season 20.

Who will star in Season 20?

Not much is known about the plot of Season 20 since filming hasn't even started yet. As for who will star in it, Deadline previously reported that the contracts of several key cast members are ending with Season 19, just like Pompeo's.

Maggie Pierce, portrayed by Kelly McCreary, has already left the show in Episodes 14 and 15. The rest of the main cast has yet to renew their contracts with ABC, and fans are holding their breath, hoping the beloved actors will remain on the show.

If all goes well, the Season 20 cast will most likely include the following actors:

  • Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey)
  • James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber)
  • Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt)
  • Kim Raver (Teddy Altman)
  • Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson)
  • Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd)
  • Chris Carmack (Atticus 'Link' Lincoln)
  • Anthony Hill (Dr. Winston Ndugu)
  • Jake Borelli (Levi Schmitt)
  • Alexis Floyd (Simone Griffith)
  • Harry Shum Jr. (Benson Kwan)
  • Adelaide Kane (Jules Millin)
  • Midori Francis (Mika Yasuda)
  • Niko Terho (Lucas Adams)

Episode 17 of Grey's Anatomy Season 19 will air on 4 May 2023.
